Helping a friend plan a degree.
#1
Hi guys! I am back again after finishing up my degree last year, this time I am here to help out a friend and can use some advice. My buddy has a bunch of credits that would essentially fill up all the general ed requirements at any of the big 3, but they are looking for advice on a choosing a major and a school. I know they want some sort of degree in Homeland Security/National Security, I saw that both TESU and Excelsior offer degrees in those fields, but I am not sure if these can be tested out of. Excelsior also offers a Criminal Justice degree with a concentration in Homeland Security, but I am wondering if that would be a good choice

They have taken a few study.com courses while trying to figure out a degree/school choice, but again I am not quite sure where these would fit in. I feel out of my depth here since all of my degree planning was in business. Can you guys help with this?

Below are the courses she has taken at Study.com
Social Psych
Cognitive Psych
White Collar Crime
Principles of Health
Research Methods in Psych
Research Methods in Criminal Justice
and she is currently working on Victimology

Excelsior offers homeland security and national security, but those are two different kinds of degrees. Homeland security is an applied field of study that focuses on the physical security of a country and emergency response. National security is a sub-field of international relations, and it focuses on things like foreign policy, diplomacy, international terrorism and warfare, weapons proliferation, and intelligence gathering. Which degree will be more appropriate depends on what he wants to do. If he wants to become an intelligence analyst or work in foreign affairs, then national security or security studies would be more appropriate. International relations and some history and political science programs would also be appropriate.

In her shoes, I would canvas job listings for things she would like to do and see what degrees are asked for. I would follow up by trying to network with people in those jobs (there's an internet community for almost everything) and getting their take on the job and degrees.
