High School Credit? and any other Mother's here?
#1
I'm curious if there are any other mothers on this site that have high schoolers Clepping courses?

If not, are there any other high schoolers on this site?

I spoke to the high school here and they said Clep does not count as high school credits. I thought that to be a little strange, since you can dual enroll and take college courses and get credit for both high school and college.

HI,

I am sure every state has their own rules.

But I would imagine you could write up the prep that goes into learning the information to pass a clep in a way that would be acceptable for HS credit.

For example maybe you could use the test guide as an outline and assign the amount of time spent learning each area.

While they may not give you credit if you present it as passing a test ( Clep, Dantes, ECE, etc.) , I am sure you could get it as credit if you meet the number of hours required for that specific class or requirement.

The bottom line with most schools is they need to make sure you have provided the proper number of hours and classes.

Why, mostly they fear if the child does not get a solid education they could be sued by them years later for not properly insuring their homeschooling met the minimum state requirements.

Hi! I'm a mom to 4 young sons- so far only one is old enough to start earning college credit.
CLEP does not count as high school credit because high school credits are calculated using Carnegie Units. (contact hours) This is different from college (even dual enrollment) which uses competency-based standards.

So, in high school, you only need a prescribed number of HOURS-not ability.
In college, you need a prescribed demonstrable KNOWLEDGE-not hours.

Are you a student or a parent? Just curious.

Do you happen to know if this has ever happened? I'm just wondering where their fear of that happening would come from?

(it varies by state, but homeschools are not always accountable to the public schools- this is the case in my state- we are private schools totally independent in every way from the public school system. They have no authority over us, and we have no relationship with them whatsoever.)

I use to work at a public school in NY ( non- teaching position) and this is something I often heard in regards to the reason for the large amount of documentation required of home-schoolers in our state. Luckily, when we home schooled my oldest he was over the drop out age in our state (16) so we did not have to register or deal with their paperwork. But we also did not want them to record him as dropping out. So we enrolled him in distance learning religious HS in Florida that was set up for home-schoolers to get a diploma. Our district saw it as a transfer, which worked out well for us because he now has an official HS diploma, where many of the Home-Schoolers here end up getting a GED to get into State colleges.

Honestly being sued is a valid concern, especially for states that regulate or require registration of home-schoolers. In this day and age people sue for almost anything. I remember when I was in school if you fell during recess and cut your face you went to the nurse got it bandaged and that was the end of the story. Now a days the same incident could result in a law suit.

Also when I was PTSA President, the amount of paper work and releases required to hold simple events was amazing. Schools are really scared of being sued today.

There are great home schoolers out there ( I would say 98% of more fall into this category) but there is also that small percentage that are not providing a proper education and it is that small percentage that causes this concern to the Board(s) of Education.

I am a mom of hsers but am a homeschooler also.

The schools in Minnesota that I am familiar with (not sure if it is a state policy) do not view Clep credits as high school credits. I do have friends in public/private school who plan Cleps after their son/daughter finish the course through school. In fact, on our State's web site, they encourage High schoolers to get college credit before graduation and include Clep as one of the means to do so.

Easter, Christmas and Summer break take on a whole new meaning if your student can clep high school courses.

Hi,
I am a homeschooling mom of six. My 16 year old has earned 68 college credits so far and I am just starting my younger teenager on earning dual high school/college credits through testing and ACE reviewed Penn Foster courses. Cleps can count for high school credit here. Three college credits would equal one high school credit.

Welcome to the forum! There are many wonderful people here.

Do you homeschool? I homeschool my son, about to be in 9th grade, and I plan for him to take some CLEP tests as a senior. I will count them as his "final exams" for high school as well as helping him earn college credit.

Wow, awesome thread! Big Grin

I am a homeschool graduate assisting my parents in directing my younger siblings' CLEPing and college plans. Big Grin I've done all the research for it myself so I pass everything I can along to the others. I am assisting 4 siblings right now (22 & 20 year old sisters and 18 & 16 year old brothers). I'm sure my spreadsheets and plans will continue to filter through the kids when I'm done! (I'm the oldest of 12)

Oh, on the subject of diplomas...I attended Boise State University right out of high school and had no problems being accepted. All I had to do was take the Compass test. My brother joined the Army right out of high school and all we had to do for that was have a local principal look over his classes and "ok" his diploma. We live in Idaho which has no regulation for homeschoolers.
