The U.S. was founded in 1776. Black people didn't have full rights until the 1960s. Women didn't have full rights until the 1970s. That is the majority of American history.
Let's not be dense. The main ones complaining about these courses voted for a man who hangs around with people who openly call themselves white nationalists. Not 50 years ago. Not 20 years ago. Now.
Liberty University is a far right, conservative Christian university that was founded by a segregationist. They offer an online MA in History. There's a school for everyone. You don't have to go to UMPI.

You don't have to go to UMPI. I already have a master's in history from a top 50 global uni. If other people here have graduate degrees in history (and actually understand history beyond sophomoric quips), they are free to speak up.
Your points are nonsensical, superficial, narrow-scoped, and predictable. Not even worth addressing, especially when comparing to world and modern history outside of the US. Other ethnic or national "Studies" majors don't have the same self-flagellation, which is telling.
Knaves is the only other poster who actually understands nuance and bias.

LOL. You think too highly of yourself, and no offense to Knaves, but their post was a little hard to follow due to typos and them confusing their timelines. I will say that I am not a humanities person even though I seem to know more about U.S. history than Knaves does. I earned a STEM masters from a top 30 university, a STEM doctorate from an R1 university, and the rest of my degrees are in business and social science fields. The first time, I had directly quoted another person to explain that UMPI's program is interdisciplinary. I think you might need to see an optometrist.

I wrote a brilliant ice cream shop metaphor here earlier that surely would have brought about consensus. IDK if it got removed by mods as potentially inflammatory (hard to believe given what else I've seen posted here) or there was a glitch that kept it from posting. Too bad. It would have solved all disagreements. World peace would have ensued.

Certainly not removed. I see your ice cream metaphor in post #19 on page 2 of this thread.

Well, clearly I did not get us back on topic (I thought it was a site glitch, but clearly it was a glitch in the brain.)

I don't get all the grumbling on this thread. If you're interested in American Studies, do it at UMPI. If you want a Masters in History, we have an option for those eligible at Gettysburg College. They're all history-related degrees, regardless if people like the name or not. Only thing that matters is what's on the transcript, and the courses certainly align with American history. Whichever you choose, both will do just fine. If people are concerned about the degree, call UMPI. If you have doubts, than the program may not be for you. I'm sure this degree will suffice if you want to teach primary, secondary, or higher education. Most job postings I've seen for history professions ask for a history or a history-related degree. This is a history related-degree.

An interdisciplinary degree without a thesis would be laughed at by any history department chair. What would be your research or specialty area? Nothing?
Again, if anyone here has graduate-level experience in history (with a thesis), please speak up..if not....

Yet you bleated on about a history degree as some weird gotcha to your argument; it's all too easy to side-step and use the IS focus as an excuse for the poorly thought-out curriculum.
Congrats, I have a STEM doctorate and work in a STEM field. Want a cookie? STEM has nothing to do with history or history-related degree, which is the topic of discussion. Hence why I never brought it up because it's irrelevant.

Here is a position for Adjunct Faculty - American Studies, Department of History at Rowan University. Happens to be right near where I'm at.
https://jobs.rowan.edu/cw/en-us/job/4981...of-history
If I'm reading that right, it says Department of History, correct? Also happens to be Adjunct, correct? Being awarded a master's would also make someone academically qualified to teach undergraduate studies at the minimum, no?

It would minimally check the box. It’s an RA degree that’s clearly history-related. It’s also from a public B&M.
I grant that in most competitive hiring situations to teach history at a postsecondary institution in the US, it would not get you in. But that’s highly competitive for everyone.
American social/cultural history is a legitimate research or specialty area within history.
