LSU Independent Study Courses
#1
Has anyone taken any of these courses? They seem too good to be true at only $77 a credit hour. Do you know if they are semester hours or quarter hours?

They are semester hours, and they are cheap. Those are the best things I can find to say about them.

I would not hesitate to take another class from them if I was taking a subject where instructor feedback was neither necessary nor desirable. I will never take another course from LSU if it requires essays, because those seem to be graded using the dartboard method. And, in my experience, the IS group does not feel at all compelled to provide feedback when asked. I was told that I was "unreasonable to expect feedback on an essay beyond a letter grade."

I was very unhappy with LSU Independent Study. I know others have been very happy with them.

I've taken a few to satisfy some requirements - they're a good deal.

I have to agree with Cinderly. They stink when it comes to asking why you got the grade you did but it doesn't help. It's $77 a credit hour plus a $10 course fee.

I liked the accounting courses that I took at LSU. Like others have said, they are definitely good if you don't require or need feedback. Three of the courses that I took, the instructor did provide feedback and corrected my errors in the homework assignments. In one course, the instructor did not provide any feedback, but he did at least mark which problems were wrong on my homework assignments.

There was one class where the instructor provided absolutely zero feedback. Homework would be returned with just a grade. No explanation as to what I did wrong or even which questions were wrong. That same instructor, gave me a 'C' on my final and I requested to review it. When the completed exam was sent to my proctor, there were no corrections shown on the exam and the problems were not even marked. I am positive that I did better on that exam than the grade indicated, but in the end, it did not affect my final grade.

The cost of the courses is very hard to beat. The availability of the courses that I needed for my degree and the cost are the two reasons why I used IS at LSU.
