Interesting Competency-Based Options
#1
Central Washington University is offering a competency-based degree in retail management and technology. Their website is confusing, but the cost of $6,000 per 6 months doesn't make them a good option anyway.

Brandman University is offering a competency-based bachelor's in business administration (don't we have enough of these programs?) with concentrations in information systems management, logistics and supply chain management, management and organizational leadership, and marketing. They are cheaper than WGU at $5,400 per year.

Lipscomb University's CORE program is not nearly as flexible as the other competency-based programs. They have you go into their assessment room and demonstrate what you already know for a maximum of 30 credits. Those 30 credits may or may not apply to your major of choice.

Washington's community colleges are going to start a pilot program of offering a competency-based degree in business administration (yay, another business administration program).

It's really strange that there aren't more competency based programs for things like Computer Programming, Graphic design (Hodges I know offers this but they're the only ones). I'm also surprised that there aren't liberal arts programs like History & English available via competency.

NAU offers a general liberal arts degree. I think the competency-based programs are trying to target in-demand skills for the most part. Graphic design isn't really in demand. There are way too many people with business administration degrees, but it's the most popular program. I'm surprised these schools aren't offering psychology and criminal justice with their popularity, but I guess it's harder to argue that those are in demand. At least business administration is flexible.
