College Credit for knowing a language
#1
Hi there,

Besides English, I'm fluent in French (courses all the way through High School and work training) and Dutch (native language). I was wondering if there was anyway to get college credit for knowing these languages. Maybe there are tests or language evaluation programs that awards credit?

Any information will help me!

Thank you!

- Linda

EDIT: I found some interesting topics already (why didn't I look before?) and I found ACTFL, which is probably exactly what I need! Thank you!

You can use ACTFL for both. Depending on where you decide to attend, you can earn up to 14 general education (humanities) credits for French, and an additional 14 for Dutch.

With ACTFL, you can get up to 14cr for the speaking portion, and up to 14cr additional for the written portion. There is a limit to how many of those credits will apply to a degree, so plan accordingly. But it is certainly worth the $115 to take the Oral proficiency test for each and then see if you need any additional credits and schedule the written (a little different how that testing works).

Do you have more info on this by chance? At one time, I was trying to get the scoop, but when I looked into it, I got the impression that the written and oral duplicated each other (either or- not both). If they don't that would be outSTANDING!

Wow, that does seem like a massive amount of credits. As the others have pointed out, I would check how many of those credits would be accepted. Nevertheless, its' still very impressive.

I would also have a look at the CLEP language exams. It's an easy 9 credits if you're reasonably proficient and can score 59 and upwards (scoring between 50-58 is worth 6 credits). It used to be 12 credits before the language exams got a recent downgrade. Here's a breakdown of the exam contents taken from College Board's site:

https://clep.collegeboard.org/exam/french-language

15%
Section I:
Listening: Rejoinders
Listening comprehension: choosing the best responses to short spoken prompts
25%
Section II:
Listening: Dialogues and Narratives
Listening comprehension: choosing the answers to questions based on longer spoken selections
60%
Section III:
Reading
10% Part A. Discrete sentences (vocabulary and structure)
20% Part B. Short cloze passages (vocabulary and structure)
30% Part C. Reading passages and authentic stimulus materials (reading comprehension)

Unfortunately, there is no Dutch language CLEP.

Thanks for bringing those up. I knew I forgot something important in my previous post.

NYU and ACTFL offer both languages, but CLEP only offers German/French/Spanish.

Honestly, for the price and number of credits, if you're proficient in a language, it makes much more sense to do the ACTFL.

ACTFL - $115, can do online Oral Proficiency Exam from your computer whenever you want to (no need to schedule) - it only takes 20-40 minutes to take, 100% listening/speaking - up to 6LL/8UL credits
12 languages available online, another 72 available through a proctor (like your HR department) and done via telephone
possibly another 14cr for the Written test as well

CLEP - $80+testing fee+time driving to testing center+scheduling, can take up to 90 minutes, includes listening (to bad recordings) plus reading test, either 6 or 9 LL CR
only Spanish/French/German available
