Math Help
#1
I am currently going through TESU. Math is my bane, I can do basic math with no problem, you know like balancing a checkbook, adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division with no problem. Once you add in solving for "X" I'm lost. Hell, I have to use mathway on my daughters math homework (algebra). I have run through Khan Academy and I'm still lost.

Basically what I'm saying is that I'm in the process of pursuing a BSBA at TESU. I know a BALS would be easier, its just looking at potential job prospects I do not know how a BALS will help me out (looking at a Government job). What can I do to help me with this? Is instacert good for math? Saylor? Straighterline?

Also I'm willing to be swayed as to what path I'm willing to take (I really have no idea what I want to do when I grow up). Goal path is a PM cert, then a Masters, looking at MPA.

I have run through the Ethics course, TEEX, and the free Sophia courses. So I am gathering credits, fixing to start onlinedegree.com sciences as well.

I have Degree plans saved for BALS, COMM, SOCI and I call pull up a buisness one as well if needed.

Thank You,

Forgot to add, that I am in that as well. However, that will not fulfill the Algebra requirement if I recall correctly.

That's why you want to use ALEKS for College Algebra and also Trigonometry while you're at it. It's only $20/month and it's a good tool to practice with. I would spend some time with the FREE CLEPS first to learn the info in CLEP/Modernstates and Khan Academy, then if you can't pass the CLEP, try ALEKS for a month.

There is no way I can pass an Algebra CLEP. Being completely honest here. Maybe a BA area would be better for me lmao

Seriously, coming from the same point of view you had, I was getting an aneurysm - it felt like my brain was going to pop with all that math! Do the CSM Learn course first for your Stats requirement, then do the ALEKS for the College Algebra requirement. Note, if you have a second monitor, you want to have the course material open to learn the steps again and again for practice. What I did was have a few sheets of paper and wrote down steps I didn't understand and grasp, it helped a hell of a lot with the practice.

Just to add: I failed ALEKS Stats (all 3 tries on 3 different courses from them, intro to stats, business stats, stats for health sciences) then I failed the StraighterLine Intro to Stats (I had 65% and needed 70%) and I was going to go for Study.com Business Stats, but found out StraighterLine had a Business Stats course, took that while I still had membership and I finally passed with 85%. If CSM Learn came out then, I wouldn't have had that much of an issue!!

I would say that there are lots of options, and you can start with free and move on to inexpensive, then more expensive (relative).

TESU Quant Lit Requirement (College Algebra unless stated otherwise)
Khan Academy (Algebra I & II) - not for credit
Modern States - not for credit
ALEKS (I hate ALEKS at this point, so if it doesn't work for you, move on to something else)
ICC
Saylor
SL
CLEP
Davar
Study.com (MAT 105: Precalculus Algebra or MAT 107: Quantitative Literacy)
Sophia (not Intro course)

TESU Statistics Requirement
Against All Odds - not for credit
CSMLearn
ALEKS
Saylor (Intro to Business)
SL (Intro to Business)
DSST
Davar
Study.com (STAT 101: Principles of Statistics or BUS 212: Business Statistics)
Sophia (not Intro course)

If I go the BSBA route College Algebra is a specific requirement unfortunately. If I go with a BA route CSMLearn will cover the math requirement.
Aleks by far sounds like the worst option unfortunately with all the horror stories I have heard about it. I mean a proctored exam is a proctored exam lol. At least they don't webcam everything, I hate that stuff, constantly feel like the proctor is judging me as im taking an exam.

I'm perfectly happy with a BA degree however, I'm thinking of future job prospects and I really do not know if a BA degree will put me on equal footing with others. The BSBA will put me on equal footing in the beginning.

@Madxhatter you need to practice mathematics. I say it time and time again, mathematics is closer to basketball than american history.

Practice, practice, practice. You cant land a slam dunk in a month, if you suck at math there is no easy way, you have to practice it. There is no shortcut, no cramming and no easy way. You have to practice. Set a 4 month goal, a six month goal. In 4 months your goal is to pass college algebra and statistics. You will have a MUCH greater sense of accomplishment if you make the sacrifice.

The whole point of a college EDUCATION is to do thing you aren't good at and learn new things. You don't even need to get and A. All you need is a C. Just get the bare minimum.

I recommend you do College Algebra at Sophia Learning. It is the BEST math platform for college algebra. Come on man! Just practice it. Math is much easier than many technical fields, no terms to remember, no essays to write, no creativity at this level. Just learn a few rules and regurgitate it.

As usual I recommend you go through pre-algebra first at MyWhyU:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSi0lfl-...76EBEDD88F

Then go through beginning algebra.

Most people don't suck at math. They are just lazy and many people also miss some crucial points from pre-algebra and beginning algebra. Those videos will fill in what you are missing. Professor Von Shmohawk is a genius lol.

Look at the videos. Personally people rate khan academy, but I think it sucks. It's so boring. I love math, and Khan academy just sucks the joy out of me. The guy is so monotonous and boring. Long, slow life sucking videos. Go through the MyWhyU pre-agebra then beginning algebra on youtube.

After take the Sophia College Algebra. The platform is nice because you get multiple teachers to teach the same thing. This is extremely helpful.

Just take my silly advice. You'll feel so proud when you finally get through it.

And Madxhatter. Don't fear the proctored exams, as long as you have a solid internet connection and know your stuff you have nothing to worry about. It's bitter sweet. It's hard doing it, then when you are finished and see your score, its so exciting! It's part of the experience!

If you go TESU/BSBA, then CSMLearn will work for Stats.  You can also try Study.com's Quant Lit for the Quant Lit/College Algebra requirement, it works.

I would not let math be the thing that stops me, at least not yet.  You haven't even tried to get credit yet!

One thing you might want to consider if you absolutely cannot do College Algebra is COSC.  For their BSBA, they only require Business Stats (not regular stats).  There are several options for it, including Saylor, SL, Study.com, and ALEKS.

But, if you end up just going for a BALS, then I would do COSC instead, and do a BSLS and choose business/management/leadership, along with something like communications/psychology, as your dual concentration.  TESU only allows you to choose Liberal Arts courses for your Area of Study (and most business courses will be in the 27cr of free electives), while COSC will allow non-LA courses for your concentration, with 60cr allowed.  So, you have a lot more flexibility there.  And it will cost about $2500 less.
