Moodle is trying to be top dog in the LMS market, as they're currently behind Canvas and Blackboard.
Basically, I see this as a great way to bump themselves up a notch with this set added to their portfolio...

According to the article, Moodle appears to be one percentage point behind Blackboard. I'm not surprised that Canvas is the most popular. I've attended about 50 million schools, and Canvas appeared to be the most utilized. I did enjoy building courses in Canvas more than Blackboard.

I prefer it too. It's not surprising that when Canvas came along they really drank Blackboard's milkshake.

Really? That is interesting!
I've attended 6 different colleges. 4 used blackboad. 1 used canvas and 1 used Moodle. The one that used Moodle was TESU.
Also at least where I live all the colleges near me used blackboard. Even ones I didn't go to know I they use blackboard. And the college sister attended used blackboard as well. As a result of all this, I always assumed blackboard was the standard platform for education.

I had a similar experience a few years ago. My (utterly unsupported) guess is that Blackboard used to own the market. I took a course delivered in Moodle about 10-12 years ago, and Moodle was pretty primitive back then, and didn't have much of a UI. But they have really kicked ass, and I have seen a number of schools that used to use Blackboard dropping it in favor of something else. One community college that I attended butts-in-seats some years ago was using some incredibly janky off-brand LMS (don't remember which one) but has just changed to Canvas.
But I agree that I have not personally run into many places other that TESU that are using Moodle. Gotta say, though, TESU's implementation of Moodle is easy to navigate, with a good UI, and I really like it.

I've used Canvas, Blackboard, and Moodle in the last year. Blackboard feels like its design is from the 90's. It just feels old. Not a big fan. Moodle's fonts weren't crisp and clear when I used it at LSU. I don't enjoy fuzzy fonts on my screen. I've used Canvas at several schools and this layout is the best one. It's easiest on the eyes. Not cluttered. Doesn't look like a dinosaur. This is my experience as a user. I can only imagine what it's like to design a course in these. Blackboard really looks old and tired.
