brain122 Wrote:This may be a good idea. I thought it would be more than that though. I was thinking there was some hundreds of dollars fee to apply or sign on as a student.

If we go that route, would it be similar to what the other of the big 3 would do as well? I know they are all independent of one another, but do they operate similarly or complete opposites.?

Excelsior doesn't require the enrollment fee right up front, nor do they need it for the unofficial evaluation. You only have to pay that if you officially enroll, and it can be spread out on a payment plan.

I cannot say whether COSC or TESC will do that, I am reluctant to say since I never enrolled or applied to either of them.

The only other option I could think of is a prior learning assessment that would be done via portfolio. This normally requires finding a course at the school you plan on attending and matching to it ( proving you have learned what is taught in the course) and writing up a portfolio for their review. At Excelsior you need to take a 3 credit course ( CCS*201 Intro to Prior learning & Portfolio Dev.) before this is an option. I am not sure how it works at other colleges.

Wow Peace 123! You have lots of good info. thanks.

We seem to have one of those pearson testing centers here. I'm gonna check into what it is. I don't he could do more that one of those test. He woud have to study pretty diligently to do one, but it may be doable.

Thanks again.

One additional thought - UExcel. These BETA tests are being offered free ( with promo code UEXCELFREE) through 1/31/09 and if your spouse passes , credits are awarded through Exclesior College. ( test areas: Calculus, Physics, Political Science , Psychology) Grades are due out by the end of March 2009.

UExcel - Exams

But time to register is running out. The link below will help you to locate a local testing site and to register.

Cut and Paste from the FAQs:
When will I receive my score? Will I receive credit for the beta? How do I order additional transcripts?

Your beta exam will not be scored immediately at the test center. Because the beta is, in essence, a trial run, it won’t be scored until all beta participants have taken the exam (end of March 2009). Once your exam is scored, you will receive a score report in the mail. You can also check your grade online by logging in to your profile at Pearson VUE. Once your score has been posted you may request a transcript by visiting our Web site. The first transcript is free of charge.
Thanks for the info. I guess I did not dig around far enough yet on that site.

brain122 Wrote:To truly get them evaluated I would have to do all of the "big 3" and the local school here.

Yep--that's what you'll have to do. It was a good idea to post here first to see if anyone had any direct experience that would be helpful ruling in or ruling out any of those institutions. It looks like you've received some valuable general information, but I'm not sure that anything in the thread so far has provided any particularly positive or negative feedback for a specific institution. So, here's what I would do:

It appears that applications to each of the big three require $75 and transcripts. If you apply to all three at once, you can have your transcripts sent to all three at once and make that a bit more efficient. If any of the CEU or other coursework does not appear on a transcript, then I would include that information separately.

Yes, you will have to wait--but it would be interesting to compare the responses and response rates. I'm unaware of anyone who has done this. If you do it and provide detailed feedback, that would be of great value to this forum. This would also be a great way to select the institution with which you would be most comfortable working. You may find that institution A provides the most transfer credits, but you may also find that institution A took the longest to get back to you, had the least friendly service and required the most "back and forth" to get a clear answer. Even if they provided as many as twelve more transfer credits, you can make that up with two (6-credit) CLEP tests and be on your way.

Figure out whatever you have to do with your local university. You may find that they are the only institution who will provide credit for the real estate certifications. Compare that to the rest of the info you receive and then, using ALL the available info (transfer credit, cost, service, degree plan and type, etc.) you will be well-equipped to make the best decision. Good luck!

Is this exam just about like college algebra?

I am asking for my hubby who is scared to death of the word math.

I am wondering if he could do a crash review and a crash course of physics and maybe get a passing grade.

Thoughts?

Maybe even an attempt at one of the two of them.

What does the political science fall under as far as meeting degree requirements?

anybody have a educated guess?

Thanks for your help in advance.

It is my understanding that College Math is easiest, then College Algebra, then PreCalc. Excelsior awards 6 credits for College Math and 3 for the others. Some schools do not accept College Math for a math requirement since they consider it to be too easy, but they may include it as elective credit. Even so, it would be a good place to start before trying the College Algebra.

If he’s not a Math major he probably doesn’t need to consider PreCalc.

The Official CLEP Guide has examples of all of the tests, so it is a good way to gauge the content.

Business majors nearly all need precal and stats (just tossing that in)
