New User, CLEP Test and Upper Division Credits

Hello,

I just joined up and I have a question. I may be missing something but I was wondering what courses are considered for Upper division credits? I need 12 to get my Bachelors Degree and I already decided on one with Manage Information Systems since that was part of my course work. I was blindsided with needing more credits for Upper Division electives, so I am trying to knock these out as soon as possible but not sure what CLEP tests fit the 300 400 requirement.

This will depend upon your school and probably what your degree plan is. Many schools accept the ACE recommendations, which can be found here and here, but I'd still check with your own school first to be certain.

My own alma mater of TESC has them listed here if you want to get a general idea:

You might also want to check with your school if Excelsior Exams and TECEP exams are also accepted by them. Some of them should be UL credit for your degree and these give you some more options.

It's UoP and It accepts CLEP, DSST, and Excelsior.

They just have to be Upper Level Tests, like Manage Information systems for DSST.

CLEP doesn't list what is upper or lower, or I am just missing that detail.

Welcome to the forum! Just as it is the choice of the school to accept exams for credit, it is also the choice of the school which exams they will accept and which exams they will award LL (lower level) or UL (upper level) credit for. The minimum score you need is controlled by your school as well as how much credit they will award for exam each particular exam you wish to take. Just b/c CLEP or DSST says it's a 3 credit exam does not necessarily mean your school will award 3 credits. They may award 3 credits, but they may not as well. I would ask all of these questions and get all of the answers in writing from your advisor prior to scheduling any test.

thanks, I know he said all the upper Bachelor credits on DSST (as listed on their site) are accepted as 3 credits. I guess I just have to ask him which CLEP ones are then. Thanks for your help.

If you look on the links for the ACE National Guide I put in my post above, check out the exams you are interested in and you'll find something like this in the description for many of them:

CLEP College Algebra
Credit Recommendation: In a lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Algebra are recommended for candidates with scores of 50 or above (12/09)

DSST Money & Banking
Credit Recommendation: In the upper-division baccalaureate degree category, 3 semester hours are recommended for examinees with scores of 48 and above.

However, your school sets the policy for themselves on how these will transfer in. They do not have to accept ACE's recommendations. Check with UoP on what the transfer policies are for CLEP and DSST.

I did email my adviser and waiting to hear back what is accepted by UoP.

I know the DSST tests already as he read them off to me on which they accepted, then told me to check out the CLEP as well. I honestly think he hinted at this site too as he said if you dig deep online you will find great help.

The DSST tests I am thinking of doing until I get clarification on CLEP are: Management Information Systems, Heres to Your Health, Substance Abuse, and probably criminal justice.

IC has been amazing help, and really I am a fast learner and always been a great test taker so to be able to knock it all out in maybe under a month, and also save bundles of money it amazing. It really puts my teacher goal in reach. Just need to take the CE course in NJ for $200 after I get my bachelors and then it all comes down to the application process.

I'm just quickly shooting from the hip here because I see you are online, but to my recollection there are no CLEPs that meet the 300/400 upper level requirement.

Ah, well those four DSST should do the job at least.

I am not sure if I really want to do Criminal Justice. I may switch with Intro to world religions as I had that course before, but not sure if they would accept a test for it too. I know it sounds bad, but at this point I am looking for maybe something easy. I usually love a challenge, but I just want my degree now so I can pursue a new career in teaching. 10 years in Banking Customer Sevice type jobs has taken it's toll, but also I am completely bored with no challenge.
