New here/Penn Foster Accounting Cert?
#1
Hello, All, I've been quietly looking around a bit. This seems to be a great place!

It looks as though folks have been pleased with their Penn Foster classes. I'm now wondering whether any business majors have considered trying the PF Accounting certificate. Most of the courses appear to be ACE reviewed, and for less than $600, 36 credits, or even 30 credits, would be a steal! I've been thinking of trying a single Statistics class so that I'll know whether their materials and approach actually get the information to my brain before diving into the entire certificate.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and ideas on this, and thank you for all the information already posted here.

I personally liked the Penn Foster methodology. The material did not have a lot of fluff added. Just the basics. You are sent your materials and can complete each segment at your own speed. I finished the Financial Management course in a week. Did I read everything? No. I read enough to be able to answer all the questions on the chapter tests (open book)....and I took the final and passed (open book), so I was happy.

I was already familiar with the concepts, so it was a good alternative for me.

PF is not easier than other methods, but it is more convenient.....and a big bonus is that you can retake your final if you bomb the first one. I needed that option to finish my Technical Math course.

Sandy,
I just reviewed the cetificate for $600 and my jaw dropped. You're right...almost 30 credits.

Here's the link Accounting Certificate Outline | Penn Foster Career School

This won't be the fastest method, because you will have to work your tail off, but it certainly is affordable and you would definately learn the material.

Worth finding out if all credits transfer ro TESC.

Where does it say that it is 30 units? I couldn't find that part. If ACE approved, could I use these 30 credits as my 30 "new" units for a 2nd degree in accounting???Rolleyes

Are Penn Foster courses transferrable to Excelsior/TESC?

Penn Foster's website does not say how many credits the certificate is worth. Since other PF classes were ACE reviewed and others have said that they transferred to both Excelsior and TESC, I checked the ACE website to see whether the certificate courses had been reviewed. It appears that the course numbers and descriptions match except for the basic computer course, and I didn't find the computer accounting course on the ACE site, though I may have missed it.

I'm not currently enrolled with TESC, but I plan to check their index of courses for Prior Learning Assessment to see whether there are matching course descriptions. Maybe an Excelsior student could run it by one of their advisors?

I called Excelsior, and they said as long as the program is ACE Certified it would transfer, but then again, I'm not enrolled there so it could have been a generic answer.

If all 30 credits are ACE approved, then you could use them to fulfill the 30 new credit rule. However, I doubt that the specific 30 credits covered by the PFC accounting certificate would fulfill ALL the requirements for the accounting major at Excelsior.

The reason for this is that PFC is only a 2-year college. It only grants degrees up to Associate's level. As a result, none of its courses are upper level. So, at best, you would end up with 30 LOWER LEVEL accounting credits to transfer in.

Hope that helps,
