No more BA in Social Sciences at TESU!
#11
davewill Wrote:Ultimately, yes, you have to enroll, but I'm pretty sure applying sets the date, assuming you enroll within the year. So, if you don't enroll, or if you let your enrollment lapse, then you lose the "lock-in", but applying gets starts the process.

If enrollment lapses then you lose it, but simply applying doesn't grant it, is what I mean. Everyone who was accepted but not enrolled and now has to take (or challenge) the cornerstone can attest to this being how it works, I believe?

Unless things have changed lately TESC always updated their catalog and requirements on July 1st so if you apply now as long as you enroll before July 1st 2017 you will be on the current catalog.

BTW my AA just says Associate in arts on my transcript it says liberal studies. My BA says Bachelor of arts with nothing else only on my transcript does it say: Degree Awarded - Bachelor of Arts Area of Study - Natural Science/Mathematics.

So I just wonder how or if they will change that?

In my original post, I forgot to mention the changes in the area of study. These are the new requirements. They are less rigid than the original BA - social sciences.

Liberal Studies-Social Sciences (18SH)
GPA Achieved/Needed: XX.XXX / 2.000
> The Area of Study for this degree program consists of the
> 18 semester hour Concentration, the 12 semester hour
> Liberal Studies General Courses and the 3 semester hour
> Liberal Arts Capstone, for a total of 33 semester hours. A
> MAXIMUM of 6 semester hours within the entire Area of Study
> can be at the 100 level.
>
>
> Within the Concentration, complete 15 semester hours
> in the Social Sciences at the upper level (300/400) with a
> grade of C or better. Complete an additional 3 semester
> hours in the Social Sciences at any level with a grade of C
> or better.
Liberal Studies General Coursework (12SH)
GPA Achieved/Needed: XX.XXX / 2.000
> Complete 12 semester hours (SH) of Liberal Arts and
> Sciences coursework with a grade of C or better.
> A MAXIMUM of 6 semester hours within the entire Area of
> Study can be at the 100 level.
Liberal Arts Capstone (3 SH)

> Complete course LIB-495 Liberal Arts Capstone for 3
> semester hours (SH). A grade of C or better is required in
> this course as well as within all courses that make up the
> Area of Study.
>
> This Capstone course must be taken at Thomas Edison State
> University or via an approved Thomas Edison State
> University Academic Program Review.

I didn't think so, but after researching, I'm forced to admit you're correct. Applying doesn't do anything towards setting your current catalog year.

Interesting. It wouldn't benefit me at all to switch then, because it would still require the same 12 UL AOS credits that I currently need (out of the 15 required under the BA.LS-SS or the BA.SS). Good to know!

Yes, I graduated TESU when it was still TESC. I'd confirm with TESU to be 100%...but I can vouch for what Davewill said above. Apply. Even if you 1. Apply, then wait up till about 3 weeks before the 1 year timeframe to enroll, you should be okay with the old degree plan. I was also considering doing a "Bachelors in Humanities" but I have to agree with Lovewins...A Bachelors of Arts in Liberal Studies with a focus in (anything) sounds kinda lame to me. But it's totally up to you! TESU makes a good point; once you have a BACHELORS degree (in anything), that surely won't HURT you if you are looking for a job because on your degree it will just say a Bachelor of Arts. Good luck and awesome news about 5 less credits to worry about!

Hi Linda Gerr! I haven't been on here in a long time, but now the names are all coming back to me Smile I hope you finally sold your house. We moved away from Clinton, NJ ourselves roughly 2 years ago. Anyway, I digress...Back to the OP's question and our response. That's also true Linda. We should be specific how and why the "locked in" standard worked for us. When I applied in Dec, I missed the cut off for January classes, but because I applied BEFORE July 1st when TESU tends to make their changes I was grandfathered into the old degree plan. For example, If you applied now (after July 1st) then you are stuck with the new plan. If you had applied (like I did in my example) in December of last year, but didn't take classes until October of this year, you would have made it into the former degree plan. Sorry if that sounds like putting salt in a wound. Good news on 5 less credits with the new plan though!

Very good points. And I don't know, somehow I guess I thought that a degree name (ie. Liberal Studies/Arts or Social Sciences) at one state school would mean something similar at another state school. Why else does it even matter if it's on a diploma or transcript at all? Wouldn't the student then be able to just smile and say "yep, I got my degree. who cares what it's actually called". Who [why] does it benefit [matter] to change the name of the degree given? Seems like extra redtape & a TESU control thing to me.

I agree! It's a silly waste of time and IMHO the new name sounds lame.
