Nothing like a little leaning in a good cause.

My son has wanted to go to the local state college and get his MBA. He's been talking about it for the last two years. So here it was about a month ago, and he says he's almost ready, he just needs to take an GMAT prep course this summer, then take the GMAT and THEN he can apply next year. So, I looked things up and discovered that the deadline for applying for THIS year was THAT DAY. I ambushed him when he got home (about 10PM with a midnite deadline). I told him he needed to just go for it, apply that night, take the GMAT the next week, and see where the pieces fell. If he doesn't get in he's only out the application and testing fee.

He starts to do it, but keeps finding reasons to give up. I push him through the app, helping him answer the stuff he doesn't think he has the answers for. I help schedule the GMAT as well, which he also thinks is impossible until I get him to widen his search area for a testing center and we find one 70 miles away that has an opening soon enough to get his score in before THAT deadline. He studies for a weekend and takes the test. His score comes in just a tad below the average of their admissions, which isn't a terrible place to be since they obviously take people who come in below the average.

So here it is a month later, and he gets an email telling him he's been accepted. He actually thanked me for getting him moving. Sometimes the Dad business is all right.

Short deadlines = achievement. Long deadlines = never really getting around to it.
Great job putting the old foot in the kid's backside.
My dad was a great one for it and I am much better because of it.
