What is the difference in the title? Is an M.S more... professional? I see Masters in IT as more of school program based.
Example: Masters of Science in Information Technology at Northwestern vs Master of information technology at Virginia Tech.

Degree titles in this area are not standardized, but MS programs are normally designed to prepare someone for doctoral-level coursework whereas professional programs (not MS or MA) are usually intended to get someone in and out. Virginia Tech's program only requires a programming prerequisite or a programming course in the first semester of the master's program because the program is open to beginners without an educational or professional background in IT.

Programming is a small part of Information Technology and computer science. A masters of science usually has a thesis option where the masters is all course work. Which one you choose depends on what your goals are.

This particular Virginia Tech program virtually requires nothing. Programming or no programming is irrelevant to the point I was making. My point was that this particular program is designed for beginners; however, there is no standardization when it comes to degree titles. Therefore, programs have to be judged individually.
