I loved the main lectures - those seemed like high quality instruction. I hated the random YouTube videos they pulled. Those were completely unnecessary and generally not highly related to the main material. I had trouble knowing what to take notes on because each video covered so much territory. I also found that the things *I* thought were the most important concepts were not necessarily what they tested on most. They seemed overly fixated on stats and numbers over the actual concepts. They also asked questions about something the lecturer said was not important. Beyond that, I found it excessively annoying that I couldn't see the answers to the quizzes to know what I got right/wrong so I knew what to re-study.
On top of it all, it just took so long to get a lesson done. You can't just go in and do a little bit here and there as you have time. You have to have at least 45 minutes dedicated time to watch/listen to the main lecture and then extra for the random YouTube videos. It's so much nicer for me to know that I can still get things done in smaller chunks of time if I want to with the other sources like SDC, Sophia, etc... So I eventually decided that it was well worth it to me to pay $100 for a course at SDC than to suffer through the frustration of OD. That's just my personal experience!
I definitely understand your frustration. Like I said before, I started off taking notes on the wrong stuff too because with all the material they offer in one lesson, I had no idea what the quizzes would cover. Seems like the only part that really matters is the main lecture video. The Psych 101 course requires you to watch a lot of TEDx videos, which I normally love, but they just aren't important for the course itself. Some of them I've already watched prior to taking this course, so I hit play on them and walk away to do something else until the timer is up and I'm allowed to move on. I'm averaging an hour per lesson (with a 45 min main lecture video) and I don't consider that too bad as there are only 16 lessons. I would much rather prefer a Sophia course, but I'm not about to throw another few hundred dollars at a course I could finish for $9. It really depends on where your priorities lie -- time vs. money.

This was my experience as well. I thought the lectures were interesting but I didn't like the format of the course itself.

Many if not Most of the additional videos aren't necessary. Most can just be played in background while you do other things. With some planning, OD courses can be done about as fast as many of the other course providers. I do recommend notes on the main lectures though, so there's something to review before the final.

Just curious and wondering, I haven't started any OD courses but have registered for a couple, for the quizzes, how many chances are there for retakes? Are they like Study.com that allow 3 chances or is it just one chance? Are the quizzes open book as well, meaning you can have access to the video or links, study material during the quizzes?
Goals: TESU BSBA GM (Added CIS) and BA Computer Science
BSBA GM - Added CIS AOS (CIS & GM completed)
BACS & Grad Plans (BACS instead of BALS w/NSM)
AAS ACS & ESST: Remaining - Associate Capstone
ASNSM CS: Completed, ASNSM Math: Remaining - Calculus I
Taking a majority of credits at Sophia.org, SL, and Study.com to finish these degrees
Updating my courses remaining by following forum advice, guide, spreadsheet & wiki

I didn't consider taking any as open book, but I'm sure you can if you open another link. After my last quiz, I saw a timer at the end down to about a minute, so I guess they're timed. I'll have to investigate that more though.
No re-tries, unfortunately.

No retries, but the quizzes are open book/open note(I even asked).

Just got out of another OD quiz and wanted to follow-up on my last post here. The quizzes aren't timed like I initially thought they were. The timer I saw before was just keeping track of how long I took to finish the quiz. That's a relief.
Also, I don't recommend Psych 101 through OD if you have the money to take it elsewhere. The professor nearly puts me to sleep and it really aggravates me that he doesn't pronounce "th" sounds correctly. It's always "dose studies" or "dese experiments." During this last lecture, he was screwing up the memory tests and then admitted to the whole class that he wasn't paying attention. Like c'mon man, you're a college professor. Put in a little bit of effort. I don't know, I'm just over it.

like most of the alternative credits - you either pay with time or with money. If you're short on money, investing $9 and 25 hours to do an ODC class for 3 credits is a deal. I'll use these all day long for my kids. If I were in a hurry, of course we'd pay $100 for a 90 minute CLEP. It's just whatever you happen to have more of at the time.

And, don't forget learning style. My 16yo is taking some Study.com courses, and doing just fine. But if she had to watch a 45min video, forget it. She'd be toast. She would not be able to take notes fast enough, I don't think (she has some learning difficulties, and writing fast is going to be an issue), and I can't imagine that she wants to pause over and over, making a 45-min video twice (or more) as long.
My 14yo would do fine, except that he would lose interest way before the video was over. If he could speed it up, he might be ok.

in the marketing class (the only one I've observed) the first video is titled "main lecture" or such, and it is 30 minutes. This class uses Great Courses, and it's really good. Then there are a few others that are a total waste of time *youtube, etc. and range from 2-7 minutes each. I've watched the Great Courses videos several times- very very good. My son always watches them on x1 (1.5 is too fast) but the youtube ones.... I think he ignores them and lets them play in the background. So far, in his class quizzes have been based on the Great Courses, but that may change- he's only about 1/2 way done I think. (my Cybercrime son does his school on his own and I haven't even asked him about them- not sure if they are the same way)
