Paperback Swap
#1
Y'all probably know about this already, but I thought I'd throw it out anyway.

I'm just beginning studying for the Modern Middle East DSST, and I'm going to be reading the two most suggested (by the feedback section) text books. One of them was going to be close to $50 from Amazon, I think. We're part of Paperback Swap however, and were able to get it for what it cost the folks to send it to us. Yeah, like less than $5; it's awesome.

Anyway, just a little advertisement for a rather awesome company. One that is awesome because it saves us lots of $$$. :coolgleam:

I love http://www.PaperBackSwap.com too. I actually learned about it through Alissa on this forum. I haven't tried it for school though. Another book trading site I like to use is Welcome to Bookins - Home. Here is a comparison:

PBS - Trade books for 1 credit each. The sender pays shipping, which is about $3 media mail for a medium sized paperback/hardcover. PBS also has separate sites for trading CDs and DVDs.

Bookins - Trade books or DVDs for various numbers of points. Paperbacks are often about 5 points and hardcovers are often about 10 points. The receiver pays shipping, which is $4.50 for books.

At both sites, you earn credits/points by trading, but you can buy some, if you need them. There are no fees for joining either site. Postage can be printed, so packages can be mailed from home.

Watch out - Trading books can be very addictive!

I just checked this out, pretty cool! :coolgleam: I got a crazy idea: what if I buy used books at Goodwill (for $1.50), and trade them for more expensive book that I'm looking for? Could be a sneaky way to get nice books for cheap! In case you think that all books at Goodwill are junk, I got a barely used hardcover of Bourne Identity (Robert Ludlum) for a couple of bucks. I also got a bunch of nice Tom Clancy's as well.

That sounds fun and it would work! PBS offers a cell phone app, so you can check ISBNs while you are shopping at a used book store and see if anybody has that book on their PBS Wish List. That would help you find tradeable books. PBS makes no distinction between books - paperback, hardcover, mass market, collectible, textbooks. They are all 1 credit (maybe 2 credits for audio books).

Stretch this idea just a bit further: buy cheap used books, trade for more expensive ones, and then sell the more expensive ones one Amazon! Heck millions could be made! Okay, maybe a slight exaggeration! Smile

Why thank you! I hate to say it, but as a businessman, I'm betting that the dollar is going to collapse in the near future. So I'm investing in survival commodities (heirloom seeds, firearms & ammo, water filtration, etc.). I desperately hope I'm wrong, but I don't want to be caught off guard. Time will tell.
