Passed the Information Systems and Computer Apps CLEP
#1
I passed it last week, but have to admit that the InstantCert test did very little good. Most of the study questions (I would guess 70-80%) had nothing to do with the actual exam questions. If I hadn't been working in I/T for the last 15 years, I think I would have failed it! But I didn't, so yeah for me!

I totally agree with you. I took that test 2 weeks ago with memorizing almost every question at instantcert and I failed it with 2 points because There was only one question that came up from instant cert. I was really disappointed.

I still need to take the American Gov, US History I & II CLEPS but after my experience with this one, I am afraid that they will not be sufficient to prepare me for the exams.

Anyone out there taken any of these three exams? If so, was the InstaCert flashcard material good enough to pass? My university grades CLEP as P/F so I am really just interested in a passing score, I don't need to blow it out of the water! -Jake

That worries me. I'm getting ready to take Business Information Systems and I thought the cards were really easy. I have an IT background myself but now I wonder if I'll be prepared for it.

Please do not panic everybody. Every now and then people DO fail. We do not aim to hand you a copy of the test. Otherwise, this forum would not be necessary.

Here's what you need to make sure that you do to pass your exam.

1> Check the SPECIFIC FEEDBACK area of this forum. Make sure you do what everyone else who's passed the exam said to do.

2> You'll see that a lot of people recommend studying the Management Information Systems Dantes materials in addition to the Computer Apps and Info Systems materials.

3> Make sure you study the questions AND the explanations closely. Don't just memorize what's in the blanks, because I can guarantee you that most of those blanks are not going to be on the test.

4> In the end, whether or not you pass is up to YOU. For some people, they can go through our questions once, and go in there and pass the exam with flying colors. For others, they study our materials a dozen times, look up a bunch of stuff on Wikipedia, do the Petersons sample tests, and maybe still end up failing their exam. You need to find what works for you. That's what this forum is for--to provide you with a ton of feedback from other members so that you can gauge the difficulty of the exam and figure out what you need to do to earn those three credits with as little work as possible.

Good luck!

There were enough "what does TFTP stand for" type gimme questions that if you have done I/T for a while you can guess at some and do OK. Pay real close attention to project management methods and really understand the simple programming and spreadsheet cell questions. There were a bunch of those.

It was probably just me, I'm not the smartest guy in the world. If you take it seriously and you have a little I/T experience, I'm sure you'll do fine.

P.S. Have you taken any other CLEPs using the InstantCert flashcards? I would like to know if this is a waste of money or if they are accurate.

Sometimes our biggest enemies are ourselves. I've seen more comments from IT guys complaining about that CLEP, probably because they didn't do nearly as well as they thought. But sometimes, that can be attributed to not taking the time to really learn the material or from assuming that you know what they are asking, when in reality you are missing the point.

I had a hard time on the Business Law exam and I know it was because I had lived 50 years with certain assumptions that were not entirely right. I thought I knew the answer off the top of my head, but I was wrong.

I'm a Geezer and I scored a 65 on the DANTES MIS, which is harder than the CLEP that you took. What helped me when studying is taking the time to really go through the IC flashcards and learn all of the material 4-5 times without skipping sections or assuming that I knew the answers.

Imagine your old man smoking you on this test. That should be enough to light a fire under you.Smile

I passed information system and compt. app. test with 1 week of study. I had absolutely no knowledge of any computer anything..... I had a pretty low score but I was happy with a pass. I would really reccomend looking up a lot of the topics on wikipedia. I wrote down nearly every IC question and did further research on each topic. Like I said, I could turn on a computer and that's it. I didn't know ANYTHING more. If you have any previous knowledge on computers you shouldn't have a problem. Good LuckSmile
