I would like to know how this works for DSST as well since I just took my first test last week in Organizational Behavior, and scored a 59, where I needed a 48 to pass - at first, I thought that I got a 59%, but I now understand that this is not so. If anyone has any information on this I'd be happy to know about it.

I haven't seen anything that gives the detailed background stats on the CLEPs, but the DSST site DSST - GetCollegeCredit.com has a breakdown of the way that they came up with the scaled scores and minimums to pass in their Technical Data sheet http://www.getcollegecredit.com/download...s_2008.pdf
What I'd really like to see is a percentile breakdown by year for both, but I haven't been able to find that yet. Has anyone found any info on percentile scores for CLEPs or DSSTs?

This question comes up here from time to time. There isn't an official answer. I THINK the reason a solid % or raw requirement doesn't exist is because the raw score needed to earn a passing level changes from test to test, and they also run test (beta) questions. So, in one exam, a certain number of questions will always be un-scored, but you don't know which ones those are. (maybe none in mine, but 7 in yours) Also, I believe they use a random pool of questions, and so perhaps some situations may involve fewer beta questions than other times.
Consider this- in a class where fewer people earn a passing grade (lets say statistics for example) the raw score needed (the threshold) is lower than in a subject like sociolgy where a great number of people earn a passing grade. These assumptions are based on the "C" students- which is what CLEP/DSST are trying to determine. It all boils down to this: Can you answer the same number and type of questions as the student who took this class in person and earned a C? |
