Starting my AAS/RN at Excelsior
#1
I'm new here, new to forum boards, and new to the whole distance learning game. I've been doing some reading and found alot of useful information, you guys rock!!!

So, I have been a Paraemdic for 17 years and now want to get out of the streets and into the hospital as an RN. I am basically starting from nothing as far as college credits are concerned. I am looking for the quickest & inexpensive way to my AAS/RN, starting with gen ed credits. Eventually Im thinking of then going for a BSLS after I have completed my RN. Right now I have chosen to go with EC as it seems to be the best option, but that could always change as well as I am just starting this endeavor. The sooner the better, I am working away from my family in Saudi Arabia and when I complete the RN I will be returning home.

It looks like I can CLEP out(with IC study assistance) on quite a bit as well as do some ALEK, Straighline, FEMA stuff and try and stay away from EC exams as much as possible. I have quite a bit of freetime for studying as my schedule is fairly flexible

Like I said I am brand new and trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible so any and all information will be well recieved and greatly appreciated.

You can clep out almost all of your general ed requirements at EC, except for Microbiology and Information literacy, and Anatomy. The Micro and A&P are EC tests. It can be done, just got finished.

Thats great to hear about cleping out. I am now going through and trying to piece together a plan based on some of the stuff I have read. It seems that the IC flashcards are the way to go and use of any extra study materials I might be able to get ahold of. I am not looking for a great GPA but just a passing score so this is starting to seem more doable the more I read.

What are your thoughts on Straightline's English Comp 1&2 versus the EC exam?

Anyone used FEMA? I did a couple last night and seems like an easy route for free electives.

Also, where could I fit ALEK's math into my ADN scheme? I dont see any math(specifically) listed on the EC guide.

Thanks again guys.

It is a distance learning institute through which you can earn various college degrees. Excelsior college.

Likely Marianne gave you good advice (and caution) in her pm. I'll answer what I can here in case others have similar questions. First, if your goal is cheapest and fastest, EC might not be either. Faster is relative to how many clep/dsst/EC exams you take, and you can do that for any school- so being a student at EC doesn't take time off- it's the testing out that does. You have to compare the cost of what you can't test out against programs where you can. For instance a program that requires 60 credits at $100 each costs $6000. If they allow you to test out of 20 credits, you save$2000, making that degree cost $4000 tuition and $700 in testing fees. Compare that to a college that requires 60 credits at $300 and costs $18,000. That same college may allow testing out of 50 credits (testing fee $1400) and class tution for 10 credits at $3000. This makes the first degree about 4700 and the second deree 4400 - about as equal as you'll find. So, in this case, it's a matter of comparing other costs- books, fees, transportation, etc. My point- it's not black and white, you'll want to run the numbers first.

Second, if you were getting your BSN it would be a different story- but how you get your RN matters greatly. MANY states (including mine) don't accept EC toward earning your RN, and many states will give you SIGNIFICANT TROUBLE with foreign nurses training. I'd strongly advise against it. Strongly.

In a nutshell- Don't enroll anywhere, take enough gen eds to qualify for an associate's or bachelor's degree using CLEP/DSST/EC and online courses.

Do nursing science prereqs through a USA school online with labs where you are. Schools like Ocean County College make this possible. You want a USA transcript so you don't have to go through a foreign evaluation process.

Take your nursing courses in the USA when you return. Save these for last. You get an RN in under 2 years, and you'll only have nursing classes- pretty much count on having everything else done and just waiting to start. If you can pick a USA nursing program (local community college) then you could do THEIR online gen eds with your CLEPs and again, have everything except the 4-6 nursing classes done and waiting for you when you return.

*another option if you have more time, do a non-nursing bachelors in a liberal arts area (humanities, social science, natural science, etc) and then come back and do an accelerated BSN. Those are about 15 months.

Welcome Todd!

Always great to see more EMS people on here. I know a lot of people will have some great advice for you, especially now that Christmas is over, but I do have a few questions that will help give you some more applicable advice.

1. What is your "Home State" in the US.
2. What is your reason for choosing Excelsior? Is it time(want the degree faster) schedule (out of country, etc) money (trying to save on costs) or a different reason
3. What are you end goals. Do you want just an ADN/RN, a BSN as well, a generic bachelors, or something else entirely.
4. Do you have any existing College Credits at all that you can use or are you starting completely fresh?
5. What is your expected timetable. 1 month?(lol) 1 year? 2 Years?
6. What is the priority order for your degree from the following: speed, cost, convenience, academic workload.

Look forward to hearing more and I apologize for not writing any suggestions in this post. I just want to give you applicable information for your situation however, since far too often people get slammed with information that isn't really applicable to them, and it can lead to a lot of wasted time as they chase down things that don't apply to them

Hey Croc, here it goes:

1. South Carolina or Iowa at this moment but hope to do some travel nursing and international work.

2. A combination of all; fast as possible, can only do the classes/studying out of the country as I a living in Saudi Arabia - doing conventional nursing school or any conventional classes IS NOT an option, cost is always an issue in todays world.

3. Main goal is ADN/RN but would eventually like a generic bachelors in liberal studies, etc or possibly a BSN, little too early for that right now.

4. Basically starting from scratch, nothing rally transferrable as my Medic class was 17 years ago.

5. At this point Im hoping to have my ADN completed in 18 months or less. I have 6 months left on my current contract and then I plan on signing for an additional year to complete this program.

6. Priorities; a well rounded selection. I am new to the independent study thing so I have been struggling a bit but think I'm starting to catch on a little bit.

I am hoping to test out on some CLEP stuff (Sociology, Psychology, Humanities) in January when I go home for a couple weeks. Beyond that I am thinking FEMA for free electives, ALEK for some math, CLEP whatever else is possible for ADN, EC for a&p & micro Straigherline for English Comp 1&2 as I think some tutoring would be needed on this subject and not very confident with how I well I might do on my own. Then off to tackle the Nursing courses.

I am not dead set on EC but it seems like the best option form what inforamtion I've had so far. Maybe you have some good info that I have not found, remember I am new at this whole thing.

If you have some better suggestions, please pass it on as I am all ears or eyes in this case, lol.

The main priority would be a combination of speed and cost and then of course what workload I can handle which I'm not too sure what that is at this point. And remember that it all has to be completed from Saudi(studying/prep) but I can test in other locations (US or possibly Middle East), just have to time/plan it with my vacations.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Howdy Todd,

I'm going to type up some suggestions and ideas, but keep in mind that everything I type is just a suggestion, and that of course you know your situation better than anyone else on this board. Use what's helpful for you and discard whatever isn't.

Let's look at the Excelsior ADN/AASN. First of all, the only difference between the two is that with the AASN you can do seven classes as free electives (meaning you could find away to use some FEMA classes for that). The program has two parts, one flexible, and one non-flexible. There are 31 hours of General Ed and 36 hours of Nursing specific exams.

Costs: At a bare minimum for the program, you're going to need to spend:

Application: $75
Enrollment: $895
Graduation: $495
Nursing Theory Exams :$250 * 8 exams: $2000
Focused Clinical Competencies Assessment (FCCA): $390
Clinical Performance in Nursing Examination (CPNE): $2025

So without any other costs at all, you're going to have to spend at least $5880 on Excelsior itself. I don't want to discourage you from this program, but I want to make sure we brought that up.

General education:

Written English :3 Credits. You mentioned that you were considering doing straighterline for this requirement, so I'm going to assume that you still do. We'll assume that you can do the course in one month (pretty easy if it's all you're doing) and budget $140 ($99 a month plus $39 a course)

Information Literacy: 1 Credit. If you can still use Penn Foster, you can do this for about $100, or you can just pay Excelsior for one more credit. Either way, the course is insanely easy.

Humanities and Humanities Core :6 Credits. I would strongly recommend you consider the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP exam for this requirement. It's an easy enough exam, and worth a full six credits $100

Lifespan development: 3 Credits. This is an easy enough CLEP with a little study and instacert. $100

Sociology: 3 Credits Among the easiest of CLEPs, studying for it along with the Lifespan development will allow you to also practice for the general psych Clep. $100

Anatomy and Physiology: 4 Credits. There are two ways I would recommend you consider for this exam. The exam would likely be quicker and less work, but more expensive and the possibility of failing the exam. $355. The alternative would be to purchase the Straighterline Anatomy and Physiology courses that begin in 2011 and do them while you do the English Composition course. This also gives you some more flexibility for alternative nursing programs if you decide to consider those. Assuming you could also do these in a month each (you can do all three at once), $280

Microbiology: 3 Credits. There are some online courses that you can take for microbiology, but other than that your easiest option would just be to take the excelsior exam. $250

Other science coursework: 1 Credit However you complete your A&P requirement, you'll have some excess credits that will fulfill this sections, so $0

Art and Science Electives : 7 Credits. This is where you things like ALEKS or FEMA come in. You have a lot of options in this area, so I would just stay with the ADN, since there's just not a big enough advantage to taking the slightly easier AASN. I would recommend you take two ALEKS courses over two months and apply the one remaining credit from A&P to this requirement. Be warned, they are difficult, but they can apply to future BA degrees and you can't really beat the price $40.

Essentials of Nursing Care, health safety: 3 Credits. Although this is not actually in the General Education requirements list, I think you should take it as well. You can take it before you enroll at Excelsior and it should give you some sort of idea as to whether or not you will be happy with the program. $250 (but note that I also counted this in the costs above)

You should also consider the excelsior State board requirements as you consider travel. Examine this link: State Board Requirements - excelsior.edu

Testing locations: It looks like you can take CLEP/DSST/ECE exams in Dhahran, Riyadh, Dammam, and Jubail (and, if you can get access, perhaps US military installations?) I would discourage taking massive amounts of exams at once in the US, since you're not able to take them one at a time.

Recommendations: I would suggest that before you do anything else, you do not enroll in excelsior yet. They're will notify people if they're going to increase the prices, so you'll likely get a heads up on any chance to lock in prices, and since you have all their requirements, there's no need to spend money on that yet. Instead, I would suggest you take the next six months to knock out all of the prerequisites. At the same time, you can consider beginning work on a secondary degree, that would give you a generic bachelor's at the same time. You could transfer most of your eventual Excelsior nursing classes into one of their BA or BS degrees in the future as well. There are also some evaluation options to get credits for your paramedic you could consider.

To summarize

1 course :$100
3 CLEP exams (12 Credits) $300
3 Excelsior Exams:$855
One Straighterline course: $140
Two Aleks Courses:$40

Total: $1435 for 34 credits
