Study.com - Quiz grading policy unclear and needs to be changed!
#21
Study.com Wrote:Thank you for the feedback on displaying the exam quiz score more clearly on the site. We apologize for not better communicating the grading change before implementing it, and we understand it can be frustrating to work through a class and not have a clear breakdown of your grade. (Especially if you have failed a few quizzes more than 3 times.)

To eliminate confusion for users who were in the middle of a course, we have given all quizzes attempted before 1/10 a 100% participation grade.

To answer what happens when there are overlapping lessons in 2 different courses: Quiz attempts are not "reset" when you take a new course that contains a lesson you've already completed in your studies. That means if you receive a 100% in your first completion of the lesson you will have that 100% when you take another course with that same lesson.

Anyone who has attempted a quiz before 1/10/2017 has it counted as 100% towards their final grade. So ndelcollo, you will receive a 100% participation grade on all quizzes you had in question regardless of how many times you took it.

To address the concerns you have expressed, we are currently working on a solution to display all of this information (quiz attempts, best quiz score, course breakdown) along with new features we are really excited such as placement tests.

In the meantime, we are happy to answer any questions specific to your situation. If you contact our support team we will be able to tell you your participation grade and the grade you will need on your final exam to pass. We will let you know when we add the front end to display your number of quiz attempts and best score!

-The Study.com Team

I contacted the support team today to find out how many points out of the possible 50 I had toward my quiz grade. They said I have about 70% of that 50. I don't really think this makes much sense because I kept track as I went through the course and I know for a fact that I only got less than 100% on 4 quizzes and on all of those 4 I got 80% on the third try. So out of 114 quizzes I had 110 at 100% and 4 at 80% and that equals 70% total? The customer support rep said that I can send a support ticket and registrar will review it but I don't really want to wait for that as I was going to take it today. The customer support rep was really nice, he said he doesn't have the power to change anything and I'm sure he doesn't. I kind of feel bad giving study.com so much grief over this because I know the employees that are answering our questions probably didn't make these decisions and can't make a lot of bigger decisions to change it. The decisions were probably made by 5 of the top people in upper management and now the customer service reps jobs just got way harder.

So anyways, I'm even more frustrated. I want to stop complaining but I've invested a lot of time into these courses and I don't really want to switch now. I'm trying to be polite to the customer service reps because they can't do much but it doesn't seem like we are getting much help from whoever can make decisions.

The rep did say that I can go ahead and take my test and if I get under a 70 then I can send in the support ticket. I'm kind of afraid to do that but I might so that I don't have to wait.

Ok......
So for anyone who signs up here on out for study.com. Assuming the contract has been changed, this new policy is fair game. Poor decision in it seems like everyone's opinion, but fair game.
For people that signed up before 1/10. This wasn't in contract. As far as I can tell.. No emails were sent. I received no notifications about the change from study.com either. Yes.. Before 1/10 is 100% on quizzes.. Great. However, I hadn't even found out about this until literally yesterday, because there was not notification. It just changed spontaneously without warning.

You can not change a policy that someone didn't initially sign on for. Furthermore, you can't change a policy after someone signs a contract AND give no notification of the change. I've completed an entire course after the 1/10 date without the knowledge of this new policy.

Study.com is a great service. This one was a low blow. I hope y'all take it under consideration and fix the mistake or risk losing a lot of business to other sources such as SL.

I took my Macroeconomics course and finished everything but the test prior to 1/10 so In theory I should have had the full 50 points from it. I got a 69 on the final so I should have had a total of 119 points. Now 119/150 = 79.33%. My dashboard is only giving me a 76% for the course. No I guess when they reviewed my test I could have lost some points but I don't see how. Honestly don't really care about this for this course I was just happy to get it over with. I am not a fan of Economics at all and they are both done thankfully. Just though I would toss this out there.

Similar thing happened to my son on Macroeconomics. His initial (immediate) exam score showed a higher score than what he received in the overall course, even though he had 100% on the quizzes. The main difference from your example was he took the Macroeconomics exam on January 6. His overall score for the course should have been higher than his proctored exam score and not lower. I didn't mention it to Study.com because, since it was a "pass", it didn't seem to matter much.
I came to this forum researching for my now 17-yr-old son who was earning credits via testing and online courses. He completed TESU's BUS-421 in March 2018, the capstone for the TESU BSBA GM degree.  Below are the courses he took:
Study.com: Business 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 109, 113, 121, 308, 309; Economics 101, 102; Finance 101, 102; History 103, 104, 106, 108; Math 103; Political Science 102; Religion 101; Geology 101; Nutrition 101; Chemistry 101; English 305
SL: Intro to Communications, Accounting 1&2, Financial Accounting
ALEKS: Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, PreCalculus, Statistics
TEEX: Cybersecurity 101, 102, 103
Sophia: Developing Effective Teams
312N-H Ethics & the CPCU Code of Professional Conduct
Community College: English 101 & 102, Calculus 1
TESU: MAT-105 Applied Liberal Arts Math TECEP, BUS-421-OL BSBA Capstone Course (January 2018 term)

Study.com Wrote:Since you completed the quiz before 1/10/17, we have given you a 100% grade for that quiz. So there is no need to take it additional times for it to count toward your grade.

Although study.com is saying you will get 100% for quizzes taken before 1/10/17, the quizzes that I have taken before that date are not all showing up as 100% on my account. When I call they seem very confused about what my overall quiz grades are for a lesson.

Yes, this happened to me as well on a psychology course I passed. I didn't fight it, a pass is a pass, but if my grade had been borderline and I missed passing by a few points it would have been very frustrating.

Perhaps we could give them a break, as they've shown multiple time on here that they value our feedback and are working to provide a better product for us. Meanwhile, what they've given us to work with is very doable (and superior to many other programs, imo). Even their new grading policy is still very generous as far as grading policies go. They've shown their willingness to work with us; we should reciprocate the same to them. The number and quality of ACE courses they've added in just six months' time is enough of a perk for me to put up with some of the temporary glitches we've seen.

I don't think the new grading policy would be that bad if it were being done the way they say it is but at least on my account it definitely is not. The only thing I can figure is that they are counting my first two attempts against me because I had gotten 100% on all but 4 of the 114 quizzes and they said I only had 70%. I typically take two study.com courses a week and I pay for the membership so I don't really want to just wait around a few weeks for them to get their act together.
