TESC AAS in Environmental, Safety, and Security Technologies - Area of Study
#1
Hi all,

I've sent in my application to TESC and plan on the AAS in Environmental, Safety, and Security Technologies. An AAS will get me a small increase in pay at my job. Besides the capstone, I pretty much have all the other credits except the 21 to satisfy the Area of Study. I planned on completing several FEMA courses for this, but I see TESC no longer accepts them. Does anyone have a list of CLEPs or DSSTs that will satisfy this option? I've searched these forums with no result.

As I mentioned before, I have credits already to satisfy the other categories for the degree if anyone has a suggestion for another AAS - as long as it could pertain to the industrial field (business, safety, computers etc). Thanks!!!

Consider using 1 additional GenEd TECEP along with the Capstone for the 12CR needed to meet the Associate's degree residency requirement for the Pay Per Credit Tuition Plan. TECEPS are now $111 and the capstone would cost $1473 (out of state cost). Cheaper than the Enrolled Options Tuition. Thomas Edison State College: Selecting the Right Tuition Plan

[/URL]For AAS ES&ST you could use
AOJ-102 - Intro to criminal justice DSST
GEO-151 - Physical Geology DSST (This course should fit but confirm with advising ?)
ENS-201 - Environment and Humanity: Race to Save the Planet DSST
LAW-201 - Business law CLEP
ETH-201 - Environmental Ethics TECEP
APS-289 - Radiation Safety Officer TECEP (you could probably even use the FEMA courses IS.3, IS.5, IS.346, IS.393 to help study for this TECEP)

Also, ask Advising if they would approve the following NFA Ace Approved Courses for 3CR and/or TEEX Cybersecurity Courses for 4-6CR?

Alternate degree programs - AA General Studies or AS in Business Administration (no capstones required)
Pay Per Credit Tuition Plan - Use 4 TECEPs/12 CR across degree plan total $444 (out of state cost).
Thomas Edison State College: Associate in Arts
Associate in Science in Business Administration Degree Program

On your way to earning an associate's degree you might also consider enrolling in a BSBA program in one of the following areas of study (capstone can be met by TECEP exam or Penn Foster course). Great buy when using the Pay Per Credit Tuition Plan and taking 8 TECEP exams across the degree to meet the 24 credit residency requirement (approx $888 out of state cost). Complete the degree plan by testing and using alternate methods (Aleks, Penn Foster, Straighterline, etc) to complete the remaining courses at your leisure. As long as you take one TECEP per year you remain an enrolled student. You could quite easily and affordably take 2 yrs to complete your BSBA.

BSBA in Computer Information Systems Degree Program

If you do a bit of research on the forum on these degrees, you would be surprised to find how easily doable they are.

I earned that AAS. For some reason, TESC is no longer allowing what-if evaluations in Online Student Services for that degree. That was the only place where I could find a list of applicable courses. They don't even list specifics in the 2014-2015 catalog. From what I can remember, criminal justice, emergency management, environmental science, fire science, occupational safety, and IT courses can be used for the area of study. Most of my area of study was criminal justice.

TESC also offers the AAS in Computer Studies that's pretty flexible, but it, too, requires the APS capstone.

Thank you guys for your replies; they are incredibly helpful! Bricabrac, I will mention those courses to my advisor. I submitted my application last week along with the $75 fee but have yet to hear anything from them.

Hmm, I could call HR and find out - thanks! I couldn't find the AAS in General Studies anywhere on the TESC website, unless you were refering to this: Thomas Edison State College: Associate in Arts

Yes, it's an Associate in Arts, not in Applied Science. All the credits fulfill the general ed requirements for a bachelor's degree. Good luck!

Be careful, there is a huge difference in costs. Yes, you may have met most of the AA degree requirements but to transfer in all current (57) credits to earn this degee it would be under the enrolled options tuition plan. Including the final 3CR TECEP exam - Approx cost: $3,154+111+299 = 3,564.

As I mentioned in my prior post to qualify for the pay per credit tuition plan you would need a minimum of 12CR to meet the residency requirement. If the AA General Studies degee is approved, you can take 4 general education TECEP exams $111 ea. Approx cost: $444+299 grad fee = $743.

In my opinion, the savings is more than worth the time/cost of the additional exams. You can put those extra dollars to good use by beginning to work on your bachelor's degree. May as well take advantage of the momentum and the current pricing, who knows when restrictions may be established. RA Degrees at these prices are a steal. Smile

What Bricabrac said. Take the Ethics TECEP and pick three more from General Ed (not business TECEPs etc.) to earn your AA.
Great catch, Bricabrac!
