TESC Capstone prep work?
#11
Are there any capstone papers floating around that I can view, so I have some idea of what is expected of me??? Please......

My capstone started today, and I feel so overwhelmed. I have no idea where to start.

If there are any others I'd be interested as well.

Are you doing the Guided Study version? That's the one I'm doing, just getting started on the reading today... feeling the same way you are. Still deciding on a subject to write about.

Good luck to everyone doing the Capstone!

I didn't realize they had (at least) two guided study sessions this month, when I signed up there was only one choice. My mentor is David Longenbach.

All the best!

I bought the two required textbooks last night on Amazon. The idea of breaking it down to 5 pages per module, makes it seem less daunting. I'm still not excited about this whole thing. Lol

Am I correct in assuming that the 25 page minimum doesn't have to be 25 written pages, a few pages could be charts, graphs, tables, etc. Also does the total page count include bibliography, title page, etc.??

Charts, graphs, tables, etc are NOT part of the 25 page count. Really, don't worry. My capstone was 47 pages. There is an awful lot of repetition. And if you correct your papers for chapters 1-5 as you get them back, putting the capstone together and submitting it will be the easiest assignment. I was convinced I was doing something horribly wrong because that assignment was so easy. Smile
I also looked at the description of the creative project but decided it would be more difficult than writing.
My advice would be to think of a topic that interests you and try to think of a few subquestions to research that will answer your main question.(that was the hardest part for me) My subquestions actually changed a bit as I did my research.

Lyanne is right. My capstone is turning out to be around 34 pages of just the writing, but with the bibliography, annotations, and appendixes, it could be near fifty pages.

It is normal to feel overwhelmed. It'll feel like you are trying to take in a fire hose of information all at once. But rest assured that as you progress you will get more comfortable with your mentor and what they expect of you, and you will look back at the end and wonder how you did it. I am preparing to revise and compile the final capstone paper for the last assignment, and I just go back and wonder how I did it.

This is class that can be daunting and overwhelming but also rewarding. I began my paper on day one and thought 25 pages would be difficult. By the end my total amount of pages was 42. My best advice is to a) pick a subject that truly interests you and b) just write. By just write, I mean if you are not in the mood tell yourself you will stop after 30 mins. If you still hate it and can't accomplish anything you earned the right to stop. However, what often happens is you get into a flow and often do more than a hour. I learn that trick from an author. A great book(s) on creative motivation is Do The Work or War of Art both Steven Pressfield.

I just handed in chapter 2 on Sunday, and so far I have 17-18 pages. With 3 chapters to go, I should be well beyond 25 pages.

Just to echo what everyone said to me, before I started the capstone and was uneasy, at the beginning 25pages seems daunting but a few weeks in you will be fine.
