TESC Newbie Help
#1
Hi guys,

I have been lurking here for forever. I've taken several exams and passed (Thanks InstaCert). Now I'm ready to take the plunge. Here's my lineup.

CLEP Passed
Social Science & History (6)
English Comp w/Essay (6)
A & I Literature (6)
Biology (6)
Natural Science (6)
Intro to Psychology (3)
Intro to Sociology (3)
Intro to Educational Psychology (3)
Human Growth & Development (3)
American Government (3)

DSST Passed
Drug & Alcohol Abuse (3)
Organizational Behavior (3)
Intro to Computing (3)
Technical Writing (3)
Astronomy (3)
Counseling (3)

ECE
Research Methods in Psychology (3)
Cultural Diversity (3)

FEMA (25)
NFA (3)

I also had a couple courses taken:

Intro to Criminal Justice
Human Ecology (Bio 151)
Business Law (BL 201)

I'm a firefighter so... was thinking maybe the Emergency Management.. but will settle for a Liberal Studies.

Please advise.. thanks

You can easily get the AAS in Environmental, Safety & Security Technologies with FEMA credits, but you'll have to take the capstone whenever they finally offer it. It would be very difficult to find the core courses for the BS in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness outside of TESC. You don't have to settle for the BA in Liberal Studies which is probably the worst degree anyone can get. With the exception of the capstone, you can test out of psychology, social science, BSBA in General Management (no capstone), and probably natural science/mathematics and humanities (even though this is not much more marketable than liberal studies). You can almost test out of history, but it shouldn't be hard to find a cheap history course somewhere else to finish off the degree. Completing a criminal justice degree probably wouldn't be that expensive or difficult with the number of ACE-approved courses from Propero and Penn Foster.

TESC also offers an ASAST and BSAST in Fire Protection Science. You might be able to get some credits for your firefighter certification.

How would my credits work for the BSBA General Management? Like the no capstone feature.

Wow, when did they stop requiring a capstone for the BSBA in Gen Management?

The name was changed from business policy capstone to strategic management. It wasn't ever really a capstone since you could test out of it with a tecep or transfer in a similar course.

You mostly have gen ed credits. Organizational behavior can be used in the management area of study.

I agree about eliminating the Liberal Studies option. It's nothing more than a basic checkbox of a Bachelors, but will serve no real purpose in advancement other than that. Do you plan to stay in the emergency career track, or are you hoping for something more versatile that might translate outside the service field?

If you plan to stay in firefighting specifically...I would not normally recommend a non-RA school, but Columbia Southern University is supposedly highly respected in firefighting chains specifically. It's one of the only fields where I'd say they have a possible edge over the Big 3.

If you want something versatile that might give you outlets outside the field, I'd suggest one of the BSBA tracks, with a side project of picking up the AAS-ESST.
