Hi all
Hope I'm not wearing out too many electrons - or my welcome - here. I'm just getting started with this and my excitement is matched only by my ignorance. Hence a lot of stupid questions I can't wait to ask! hilarious
Does anybody know how the big three - specifically EC - handles quarter hour credits? I took 10 classes at Northeastern University many years ago and earned 30 q.h. credits. Are these simply worth three-fourths of a regular credit?
Thanks
Mitch

Oddly enough, or at least it seems odd to me, you actually are awarded MORE hours for each quarter-based class. I transferred 13 classes to EC from a school that was on the quarter system and received 3.33 credits for each class. One or two classes don't really make a difference, but a substantial number of classes can really rack up the "extra" hours.
Good luck!

If you received 3.33 semester hours then your Qtr hour courses had to be worth 5 Qtr hours each.
Excelsior converts the Qtr hours to Semester hours.
EG: I had a 4 qtr hour class and it was converted to 2.67 semester hours.
4/1.5 =2.67 or 4x.66667=2.67

Excelsior, as with many schools, converts quarter hours to semester hours by multiplying the number of credits by two-thirds. Therefore, a a four quarter hours course converts to 2.67 semester hours.
The credits are converted per course, not as a total. Therefore, if you have 3 courses of 4.00 quarter hours each, you have 8.01 (i.e. 2.67 multiplied by 3) semester credits not 8.00 semester credits. Similarly, if you have 3 courses of 5.00 quarter hours each, you have 3.33 semester credits per course, for a total of 9.99 semester credits not 10.00. As such, it is theoretically possible to end up 0.01 credits short of graduation.

MaieJaie,
Thanks for info that Excelsior converts on a per course basis rather then on the total credits transferred in.

Mathematically speaking, you wouldn't come up 0.01 credits shy. 3.33 is just a rounded number, but the actual amount of credits is 3 1/3. One third times three is one. I don't know how Excelsior or another college would actually treat them, but if they take the 2/3 formula seriously, my explanation makes sense.
