TESU Acceotance before HS Graduation
#1
Does anyone know if there is a way for my son to apply to, get an evaluation and get accepted during his upcoming senior year in high school.
It would be great if he can earn an AA or AS to transfer to Rutgers. In effect, to start as a junior at the same time he would traditionally start as a freshman. It may be easier with another school, such as COSC however, with both being NJ state schools, Rutgers would have to recognize the TESU degree.

Also, does anyone know the credit TESU awards for the following AP exams?

World History
Calc AB
Eng Lang
Eng Lit
Stats
Chem

Thanks much!

Your son may be able to still enroll in TESU with a waiver. See HorseManiac's post at http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-tho...post160081 or ejcompere's post at http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-tho...post160665.

I'm not sure about AP Tests, maybe someone can post a link if there is one. Otherwise, you can e-mail academicadvising@tesu.edu and confirm with them (they reply within 1 business day usually).

TESU is rather expensive for an AA/AS at this point, with their $2000 residency waiver (not having to do with where you live, but actually how many credits you take at the school). COSC is a better bet cost-wise for an AA at this point in time.

Also, the articulation agreement you're talking about is from NJ community colleges to NJ state colleges, so just getting an AA/AS at TESU will not work, as it's not one of the schools discussed in the articulation agreement. This goes for getting an AA at any school outside of the NJ community college system, like a CC in AZ or FL.

If you decide to go to TESU or COSC for the AA degree, just know that Rutgers may or may not accept the non-traditional credits your son has. Since it looks like the CC's in NJ accept CLEP and AP exams, then that's your best bet. If you opt to go ahead and get the AA anyway, using non-traditional credit, then you just need to know that there may be some issues - they will want to see where the credits were received (original source), and when you send them an ACE transcript, they will probably reject those credits. He will have to retake those courses at Rutgers.

Also, if he were to completely test out using non-traditional credits (including AP and CLEP), he wouldn't have a GPA, which might make it more difficult to get into Rutgers. Some schools are better at dealing with things like that than others, but some people on this forum have had good luck getting accepted at all kinds of schools with non-traditional credits, even competitive grad programs. So it's not impossible, just know going in that they may be more difficult to deal with.

+1, dfrecore has very much touched on what I wanted to type. An alternative would be to get an AA/AS elsewhere and the BA or BS at COSC or TESU. See here for the details in another thread. http://www.degreeforum.net/general-educa...n-mom.html

Thanks all for the feedback. I am not convinced the AA or AS from TESU will not be treated the same as a community college associates.
While the transfer agreement does reference community colleges, based on the stated purpose, I am not certain it limits it to them:

"PURPOSE: Seamless transition from public associate to public baccalaureate degree programs and
supporting the successful acquisition of baccalaureate degrees by transfer students."

This agreement allows an associate degree holder to receive credit for 1/2 the required credits for a BA or BS at the 4 yr institution, therefore the risk of CLEP acceptance is not relevant ( unless being used as a prerequisite) I will investigate and report back.
If it works, I will gladly pay $2,000 to TESU avoid $26k yr (tuition room & board) *2. A distance BA/BS does not work for him since he has no work experience and needs the assistance of a large career services team.

Can't this be confirmed by a simple call to or appointment with Rutgers?

So, I'm really familiar with this, since we have the same thing in CA. The articulation agreement is directly between the UC/CSU system school and the CA CC schools. The CC's have worked directly with the US/CSU to determine which courses will count at those schools, and which won't. So when you go to take a class at a CC here, it will say CSU, UC or CSU & UC. There's also a standard agreement here where they have determined the particular set of courses that will transfer:

------------------------------------
CSU General Education Requirements

Complete all the course requirements for CSU GE and apply for CSU GE Certification from Palomar College to waive the CSU campus specific lower division general education requirements. Some majors at some universities do not require the entire pattern of courses. See a counselor for details.

UC and CSU General Education Requirements

Complete all the course requirements for IGETC and apply for IGETC Certification from Palomar College to waive the UC campus specific lower division general education requirements. Not all majors (such as engineering and other high unit majors) recommend completion of IGETC. See a counselor for details.

------------------------------------

So, it's not just that they get an AA at the CC and automatically get to go to the CSU/UC school and the courses transfer; the schools have figured it all out and set it out on paper. They are very particular about which courses at each CC they will accept towards the lower division requirements at the schools. They also have rules on CLEP exams; no UC school will accept them, but most CSU schools will. So, you actually have to go to the school you eventually want to transfer to, make sure they accept the CLEP exam you want to take, and then you're fine. So, just because the CC will accept a certain CLEP exam doesn't mean that the 4-yr school will as well.

There are also articulation agreements between CC's and private schools here, and you can look them up. But, there aren't normally ones between 4-yr schools. So from TESU to Rutgers will be hard to find. BUT, you could go to the Rutgers website, see what they require for courses, and then work backwards from there, fitting those particular courses into your TESU degree plan. It's just a different process from the Articulation Agreement. There is nothing in writing saying that they will accept those courses.

So, this is one of the cases where you need to figure out exactly what you want to end up with, and work back from there. It's totally doable. You will just want to be careful not to take courses in ways that Rutgers won't accept (like if they won't accept ACE-recommended courses, then don't bother; if they will accept CLEP, go for it).

Good luck!
