TESU New Major Suggestion BA/BAS in Computer Studies
#1
Lightbulb
Would anyone be interested in a BA/BAS in Computer Studies? TESU already has an AAS in Applied Computer Studies.

BA/BAS in Computer Studies Degree Structure:

45 Credits in the GER.
45 Credits in any combination of Computer Science and CIS courses but one of each required. 15 UL credits and 39 of 45 credits have to be level 2xx or higher.
30 Credits in Electives.

Thoughts?

They have a BS in Technical Studies that is close to what you describe, but with fewer electives:
https://www.tesu.edu/degrees-programs/ba...tudies.php

1. General Education (46 credits): Requires Physics I with Lab or Chem I with Lab, Computer Concepts and Applications

2. Technical Studies (55 Credits)

A. Technical Area requires (10 credits): Stats, Higher-Level Math (e.g. pre-calculus or calculus), and either Physics II with Lab or Chem II with Lab plus A + B

B. Technical Discipline (39 Credits): Discipline can be Computer Studies (other options include Engineering, Fire Science, Nuclear, Automotive, Lab Animal Science, Health Studies, Aviation, Architecture/Design, Electrical)
Technical Courses: A total of 12 area of study credits must be from 3000- or 4000-level courses
21 credits from a single discipline
18 credits from other applied science and technology disciplines

C. Technical Core (6 Credits)
   Project Management MAN-4350
   Applied Studies Capstone

3. Electives (19 Credits)
Completed: HAU MBA | BA Economics (US) | Finland Open Studies @ XAMK/Metropolia/Helsinki/Laurea
Certs Completed: Scrum CSPO/CSM | Google PM/Data Analytics/Marketing

The BS in Technical Studies requires multiple courses that are irrelevant to IT jobs;

Physics I + Lab, Physics II + Lab, Chemistry I = Lab, Chemistry II + LAB and Calculus.

The general electives are only 19 credits not 30 which does not make this appealing.

That degree should really be renamed to a "BS in Engineering Studies".

For IT jobs, the best option at TESU might be the BS in Information Technology (BSIT) degree, but that one also requires the chem or physics classes:

You can bring in a lot of the credit through the Coursera certificates.

For someone who is OK with proctored exams, I would honestly just recommend the BA in CS at TESU or going with WGU if they are familiar with the subject-matter. Another option is waiting to see the details of the UMPI Computer Science degree that will be CBE.

Looked at the BS IT degree too but is has similar limitations;

Higher-Level Mathematics above College Algebra, Physics I + Lab, Physics II + Lab (like you said) and only 19 elective credits not 30.

But what really concerned me was the laundry list of 12 specific IT courses and no apparent option for alternatives:

Quote:A. Information Technology Core (36 Credits)

CMP-2020 Foundations of Information Technology
CYB-1200 Introduction to Cybersecurity
ITS-1300 Database Fundamentals
ITS-1500 Computer Programming I
ITS-1600 Fundamentals of Modern Operating Systems
ITS-2610 Linux
CIS-3010 Management Information Systems
ITS-3400 Wireless and Mobile Networking
CMP-3540 Network Technology
ITS-3630 Windows Server Configuration
MAN-4350 Project Management
CYB-4500 Cloud Computing

Hmm, Basically, for what it is worth, I suggest doing the BACS and in the 30 electives area, take whatever classes interest you in Applied Science, Info Systems, and other related subjects. Essentially... You don't need to change too much a degree from BA or BAS, nor the major, just to learn what you want to study.

You can complete a balanced mix/match trifecta of certs, degree, experience at another trifecta of cost, ease, speed to get all that ROI/Value and customize it to your liking, personalize it with Coursera/EdX professional certs, get extra experience and use this BACS with extra knowledge to get into a Masters later.
