TESU Second Degree Planning
#1
I was reading on the TESU website that any credits earned before your 1st degree are conferred cannot be used for a second degree. I'm not one to just sit idly by while waiting for June to happen.

I'm currently studying German and Archaeology at a University waiting for my Grad applications to get approved. If I get enough credits done before June I will ask for another BA degree or major added to my current BALS.

Has anyone else been able to keep earning and still get the second degree while earning credits during the degree waiting period?

Credits earned before the first degree is conferred can be used for a second degree. However, you must have at least 24 credits earned AFTER the first degree was conferred in order to graduate. So if you need more than 24 new credits to fulfill the requirements for the second degree, you can dive into them early. If you don't, then better to wait. Some folks have been allowed to earn two degrees simultaneously, however that wouldn't apply to your situation since both degrees would be BA. If you earned them together that would be a dual AOS rather than two degrees. That's a completely different set of rules, which are much looser. See the article below. If you wanted to do that, you would ask advising to add the second AOS NOW, and try to get the extra credits needed done in time for the degree audit. There's no downside to trying as you can always elect to not do the second AOS and proceed with graduation.

I have had more dialog with advising recently and I found out about a few changes.

1. They (advising) are telling me I must take the capstone for my second BA (History) over (That is a very new requirement) I'm not sure why I would do that. UAF requires a certain amount of every degree taken with the school so I would have more classes than needed for a degree with them after that requirement is met.

2. You cannot do an MA and a BA at the same time with TESU. Seems odd but they do insist upon this.

My interests don't really fall into most universities unless I do an interdisciplinary degree and even then the school would have to have the fields to cover you via committee.

They want you to take the liberal arts capstone a second time?

That must be a mistake, if not, what a rip-off and a waste of time.

I'm pretty sure that was always the case unless you were doing the dual AOS.

I'm pretty sure that's correct, and it was always this way.  You can't just go back to get another BA and not do the capstone - it's a requirement for every degree, even if you've already done one for another degree.  I can't remember anyone on here NOT doing a capstone (once they were instituted).  That's why most people go ahead and do a dual major (plus saves number of courses you need to take).

Do you have to do SOS-110 as well? Or are they at least waving that?

That makes sense to me that they would require that. Otherwise they'd have a bunch of people (like me...) coming back for a second BA without taking any additional classes from them.

@natshar I'm pretty sure vetvso had already taken SOS-110

There’s the Bachelor’s to Masters option that lets you take 3-4 (?) of your Masters requirements during your Bachelors. I think I’ve read that it’s fairly expensive to do it through TESU though.
