TESU Second Degree Policy
#1
I just wanted to inform people of this policy I did not previously know about and for those of you who want 2nd TESU degree but would like to avoid SOS-110.

Apparently after you complete one bachelors degree from TESU all gen eds and free electives are waived for future degrees. This means no SOS-110. However, 24 new credits that must be earned after the conferral of the first degree are required. Apparently this policy could change soon, but as of now (May 2019) it is still active, but just remember could change at any time.

So here is an example: I started off with a BSBA (under TES-100) on my evaluation and then I added a BA. Because TESU enacted a new policy somewhere around April 2019 that adding a new degree or changing degrees which feature a different school (liberal arts, business, etc) will be on the 2019A catalog and require SOS-110. So that meant my BSBA required TES-100 but my BA required SOS-110. I asked them to change it, but they denied it, as I've seen on this forum TESU is very strict on SOS-110 thing. Here's what I was told given that information if I wanted to pursue both degrees:

Scenario 1: I earn both degrees concurrently which would require a minimum of 24 different credits between the two degrees and a maximum of 9 credits can overlap in the AOS. I would need to take SOS-110 to earn the BA.

Scenario 2: I earn the BSBA first and get it confirmed. After that I start on the BA which would require 24 new credits to be earned after the date of the BSBA conferral. This would not require SOS-110 but I would have to pay the residency wavier twice, once for each degree.

I am not asking for advice about to do in my personal situation but more presenting this as useful information to anyone out there who is considering a second TESU degree.

I'm not sure but here is an excerpt from TESU advising:

"There is one idea you could think about which would avoid you having to take SOS-110. We have a policy about second degrees. If you complete the BSBA degree and get confirmed, when you return for the BA, your General Education and Free electives would be waived. You would need to complete at least 24 new credits in your Area of Study, including the Capstone."."your General Education requirements, which includes SOS-110 will be waived. Now, this policy could change depending on when you complete the BSBA degree."

However, the part about if you are earning two-degrees at the same time you must have 24 different credits and no more than 9 overlapping is on the TESU website. And of course, it is even more well-known that doing a second degree after the first is 24 new credits earned after the first is conferred. That stuff is all over the TESU website. Also, remember two areas of study is different than two degrees. As far as the part about getting a waiver for gen eds? I have no idea.

Neither option is good - the cornerstone is $1125, the residency waiver is $2200, so both expensive options - but obviously the cornerstone is cheaper.

I'm glad to know that as of now, the 2nd degree gen ed waiver does include the cornerstone.

It appears TESU updated their website:

"Effective July 1, 2019, all* undergraduate (associate and bachelor’s degree-seeking) students will be required to complete SOS-110: Critical Information Literacy (formerly Living in the Information Age) at TESU as an online course.
As of the effective date, TESU will no longer accept transfer credits toward completion of this requirement.

*Second-degree bachelor’s students are exempt from this requirement."

Doesn't say. You would have to ask. I know for sure it applies to second degrees from TESU as thread has stated.

It's a point of confusion for me, because I received this e-mail from their admissions office several weeks ago:

"In your situation, being a student who already holds a bachelor’s degree, you will need to complete a minimum of 24 credits including the required capstone for the degree. These credits must be in the area of study and/or core of the degree. Additionally, students must complete all other degree requirements. These can be completed through transfer credits. Both the capstone and SOS-110 need to be completed with TESU."

That sounds like that SOS-110 still needs to be completed anyway for outside degree-holders. If that's still correct, it comes off as a bad joke to leash an entry-level general studies cornerstone course onto people who already have completed any sort of BA/BS degree. Capstone is fully understandable, though.

I would contact them again, and refer to the policy as stated on the website, and make them say that it only applies to students who hold a BA/BS from TESU.

I'm guessing whoever sent that email to you is incorrect; it happens frequently with TESU.
