UL Genetics course needed
#1
My daughter is in need of an UL Genetics course that'll potential transfer. I've been looking and so far have only found LL 'Intro' courses. What options do we have, if any?

TIA! AND Happy Holidays!

I don't think any of those are UL, nor does UCSD normally have college credit courses through their extension program.

There are no UL genetics courses available as alternative credit that I know of.

maybe,
I read it as "up to the school you're transferring to"
-------------------------------------
Applied Immunology
Course Number: BIOL-40043
Credit: 3.00 unit(s)

https://extension.ucsd.edu/student-resou...nformation

Courses numbered 400-499 or 40000-49999 are credit-bearing post-baccalaureate, professional-level courses designed to provide opportunities for professional advancement and enable the general public to gain knowledge in various academic fields. Credit earned in these courses may lead to the award of a formal certificate by UC San Diego Extension or be applied toward an academic degree or professional credential, subject to the approval of the receiving institution(s).

Many UC San Diego Extension courses can be transferred to UC San Diego or other colleges or universities. The transfer of credit is determined solely by the receiving institution.

UC San Diego operates on the quarter system; therefore all course credits are awarded in quarter units. The credit value of each course in quarter units is listed in the course description.

As a general rule, quarter credits are converted to semester credits by dividing the number of quarter credits by 1.5. For example, if you completed a course worth four quarter credits at UC San Diego Extension, the course would be worth 2.66 semester credits.

------------------------------------
these are all online through SUNY (State University of New York -- NOT a university, but the name of the public university system in New York -- so a group of universities)
but they will be expenseive if you're not a NY resident

these are online from a canadian school, but they are regionally accredited
I think they're about $1100 US

Athabasca University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104. (267-284-5000). The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

but whether or not your school would count them as genetics I don't know

these is online from Harvard Extension school
don't know if these is upper level

Can't say for sure, but you could have UNE's genetics course evaluated. I realize the number "looks" lower level, but it does have a bio and chemistry prereq, so it would be at least 200. https://online.une.edu/science-prerequis...-genetics/

Harvard offers 2 genetics courses via extension (online) the second one has a prereq of the first, so that might work. https://www.extension.harvard.edu/course...d=genetics

If I had more time to help with this, I'd check 4year universities that have medical schools within them (state flagship unis almost always) because they all will offer genetics (whether or not it can be taken a la carte is another question) but also, BSN programs will have at least 1 genetics program - again may or may not be upper level, online and or a la carte...which doesn't even touch the issue of cost!
Good luck!!

I don't know how it would transfer but the Uexcel exam for Bioethics is UL and could conceivably be about Genetics, if you want to ask about that. Here's the link:

The ONE that I've been eyeballing is https://extension.ucsd.edu/courses-and-p...an-disease. UCSD website said their extension courses can be transferred, etc. I'll reach out to UCSD and see if they can shed some light as well as it being LL or UL.

My daughters advisor isn't back in the office until late January, once school starts back up. This UCSD course starts before then. Her advisor said she could take a few courses outside and transfer them in. I'm willing to risk $675 + book- if it looks like it'll be 'likely transferrable'. I just need to do a little more research. I was just hoping that someone had already done this and it's proven to transfer as UL college credit.

And her course has to be specifically 'Genetics' for her degree. I'd think there's got to be A GENETICS Online Course, accredited UL, out there! At least one can wish.

Thanks for all the useful info!

Did you ask about that UCSD genetics course?

I haven't taken Bioethics, but I've taken ethics and I've taken genetics - I can't imagine bioethics counting as genetics. Bioethics will for sure discuss the ethics regarding *frankly* whether or not to abort. It's not exactly the same as genetic science - I imagine bioethics to be a much more philosophical/opinionated controversy class. Genetics as a class isn't going to go there.
