To preface, I started out considering WGU, then learned of UMPI through Reddit and went down a rabbit hole. Now I feel more comfortable with the idea of UMPI, I tend to be better at writing and projects than proctored tests.
Your Location: Raleigh, NC
Your Age: 40
What kind of degree do you want?: Management/Leadership/HR/MBA
Current Regional Accredited Credits: 0
Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: 37
Sophia Total Credits: 37 (All courses are 90%+ grades)
- Critical Thinking
- Public Speaking
- Workplace Communication
- College Algebra
- English Comp I
- Environmental Science
- Introduction to Nutrition
- Introduction to Sociology
- Introduction to Statistics
- Macroeconomics
- Project Management
- US Government
Prepared to complete these courses in the next two weeks, I move very fast at Sophia and finished the courses above in 5 weeks.
- Introduction to Ethics
- Spanish 1
- US History 1
- Human Biology & Lab
- Art History 1
- Visual Communications
- Microeconomics
Any certifications or military experience? PHR (Professional in Human Resources)
I’d like to finish for $8,000 or less.
Commitments: Full time job but very flexible schedule and I can work on school work at work, fully remote. My daughter is 17 and self sufficient.
Dedicated time to study: 5 hours minimum daily, weekends much more focus time.
Timeline: Ideally as quickly as possibly, but by end of 2024. Hoping to do Masters following by 2026.
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: None
Other things... I plan to get the UMPI BABA Management and Leadership, because the Bachelors is just the noise, and Masters is the goal. Likely MBA.
I have been incredibly fortunate to have a career built without a degree, I’m a fast learner, very resourceful, and extremely people focused. Currently, I’m a VP of People at a PE backed remote tech company. I am part of the Executive team, and we plan for an exit around 2026. I’m using the time between now and then to level up education wise for resume only (though I'm open to learning new things!). I understand business, HR, and management very well, but I realize that for some businesses, unless I’m networked, I wouldn’t make it pass the ATS without a degree(s). I earn nicely for myself, at over $200K with bonuses, but don’t want to risk backing that down just because I don’t have many letters beyond my name.
So after diving into all of the resources provided here, I’d love some “expert” guidance on the wisest next steps to wrap up courses in Sophia or through CLEP, before I enroll at UMPI. And if you think BABA is best? (I’m happy to do the Pierpont AAS too if needed)
Thanks so much!!

The BABA program would be best at UMPI. Also, the choice between a BS and a BA degree isn't going to matter much.
One of the challenges with test-taking is determining how long to study. Should it be 2, 4, 10, 20, or 40 hours? There's a kind of system for preparing for CLEP or WGU exams, but some people struggle to do them efficiently.
A major piece of advice would be to create a Google Sheets degree plan listing all the courses you need to complete for your degree.
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...egree_Plan
Regarding the MBA, you will need to choose between a program that can be completed in 1 year or less or opt for the higher-prestige MBA program that will likely take more than 1 year to complete.
Degrees: BA Computer Science, BS Business Administration with a concentration in CIS, AS Natural Science & Math, TESU. 4.0 GPA 2022.
Course Experience: CLEP, Instantcert, Sophia.org, Study.com, Straighterline.com, Onlinedegree.org, Saylor.org, Csmlearn.com, and TEL Learning.
Certifications: W3Schools PHP, Google IT Support, Google Digital Marketing, Google Project Management

Thank you for this. I have a massive spreadsheet based on the resources here. I assume based on that most of my UL or degree specific courses I have to take with UMPI. I have nearly all of the GEC completed. And once I finish that short list above on Sophia would be totally done with GEC.

Three things, 1) BABA Management and Leadership and ladder up to the MAOL is a possible option for you, 3 of the classes for the MAOL would be exempt.
2) You can ladder that and complete one of the MBA programs mentioned in the link by LevelUP, an example is the HAU MBA or WGU MBA option. Or if you prefer to skip the UMPI MAOL, you can go directly to this MBA option.
3) I usually recommend people to go for the Pierpont BOG AAS if it leads somewhere such as UMPI BAS, or if there is an emphasis you really want to have. Otherwise, it's not really needed for a Bachelors degree. If you want it, go for it, if not, skip it.

Honestly, you already have the professional certification (PHR), making the UMPI BABA M&L ideal for you. Follow the plan that maximizes Sophia, you can fill in a few ULs through SDC to get down to the 10 required at UMPI. This simple plan gives you a business bachelor well below your time and budget goals; time and money that you can then use to move on to the MBA of your choice. There is no value in adding an associate to your resume along the way considering the speed in which you'll have the bachelor complete.

Apply send your transcripts to UMPI and wait for an acceptance and evaluation, you can then see what else is missing. You should also look at the WIKI to see what courses you have to take that's missing and recommended on the WIKI already. Complete those and you'll be all set...

I've looked at the Wiki about 3,000 times since I started this. It actually doesn't seem super clear on the Calculus question as a replacement for MAT-140. I've seen some people say it worked, others it didn't. I guess I'll just roll the dice.

Hmm, when I was reading your post and the courses taken, I counted about 26. That leaves 4 courses to take in order to max the 90 credits, maybe 5-6 just in case those don't fall into your degree or even the electives. That was the reason for my 'answer' or post reply to review the WIKI, it wasn't really a reply to your MAT-140 question at all.
Now, to answer your question. You're overthinking too much, there's a lot of details to go through and understand by viewing the WIKI. Many people who have COSC and UMPI think of double dipping requirements, which is a good thing, but we need to look at the overall credits required for the degree. Guess what, you're looking at the MAT-140 as a second requirement.
Don't do that, your College Algebra and the Stats course already hit the requirement. You should be again, looking at remaining credits/requirements for the degree on the WIKI of courses you haven't taken. For review, you should have looked at the GEC WIKI here, showing 3A/3B requirements and options to fulfill it... https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...ts_Roadmap
Taking Calculus I just for the sake of hitting that requirement is not recommended, you can use that time to take something else that you want or need to for the degree. Another thing you want to do is look and see if you're wanting to go for the MAOL, 3 classes can be taken for the BABA that can go towards that.

Thank you! I think what I have left will be mostly electives then, so I'm going to fire through some of those to get myself up to the 90 credits this next week, then apply and get my transfers assessed as soon as my Spanish final touchstone comes back.
