UMPI CLASSES LEFT:
BUS 260 BUS 335 BUS 489 BUS 440 BUS 469 BUS 325 CAN SOMEONE WHO HAS COMPLETED BABA YP AT UMPI SHARE WHICH CLASSES I SHOULD DO NEXT. FROM LEAST TO GREATEST MILESTONES.
Name: EDU 153: Social Foundations of Education
Subject: Education Semester/Term: Fall 2 - 2024 Instructor: Courtney Boma Long or Short?: Long - 97.5 hours. Many people could finish this in less time; see my notes below. Number of Milestone Activities: 5 Type of Milestone Activities: Essays and reflections. Type of Final Assessment: Portfolio:11+ pages in papers, 20 hours of classroom observation Notes & Overall Thoughts: The class includes a ton of outside resources, and it’s not always clear what is expected to be consumed for the class and what is just for optional enrichment. Those who are hardcore CBE fans could probably skip a lot of it; I ended up reading/viewing most of it. (I particularly enjoyed these topics, so I didn’t mind investing the time, but others could easily be more judicious by viewing the milestone requirements first and planning accordingly.) Boma generally took 3 days to grade milestones. This class does require 20 hours of classroom observations. Name: EDU 210: Introduction to Pedagogy Subject: Education Semester/Term: Spring 1 - 2025 Instructor: Courtney Boma Long or Short?: Long Number of Milestone Activities: 7 Type of Milestone Activities: Essays, Lesson plans, etc. This does require a video recording of “teaching” a lesson. Type of Final Assessment: Portfolio with elements similar to the milestone activities. Notes & Overall Thoughts: There were so many milestones in this one, but they were all pretty short and simple, individually. A couple of them build on one-another, so it helps if you've already received feedback on prior milestones before continuing (I know some people don't care about that). I didn't have real students to teach for my video lesson, so I just pretended and that was fine. This class requires 6 hours of classroom observation, but there is an online video option for those unable to do in-person observations. Name: EDU 287: Teaching Students With Special Needs Subject: Education Semester/Term: Spring 1 - 2025 Instructor: Sam Hiscoe Long or Short?: Short-Medium (I spent around 12 hours on this class.) Number of Milestone Activities: 3 Type of Milestone Activities: Papers Type of Final Assessment: Papers, Mock Interview Notes & Overall Thoughts: This was one of the simplest, most straightforward classes I've taken at UMPI. It was certainly the fastest EDU class, too. Also, it did *not* require any observation hours, which was a nice break. Note: The feedback from Hiscoe had nothing to do with my work; seemed to be a copied/pasted reiteration of the lesson; however, it was returned within 1-2 days.
Current Goal:

Name: HTY 489: History of Infectious Diseases (Special Topics In History)
Subject: History Semester/Term: Spring 1 - 2025 Instructor: Zaborney Long or Short?: Short (Took me about 12 hours of actual work.) Number of Milestone Activities: 2 Type of Milestone Activities: Short essays (no word count given) Type of Final Assessment: 1500 word essay Notes & Overall Thoughts: Dr. Zaborney gave literally zero feedback, but I got 100% on all my assignments, so I didn’t mind.

Name: EDU 364: Foundations of K-12 Content-Area Literacy
Subject: Education Semester/Term: Spring 2 - 2025 Instructor: Shannon Sleeper Long or Short?: Long (It took me 40.5 hours, personally) Number of Milestone Activities: 9 milestones + 3 discussion prompts Type of Milestone Activities: Essays, short answer responses, etc. Type of Final Assessment: Portfolio: 6pg essay + “toolkit” (4500+ words) Notes & Overall Thoughts: The first competency is worded very poorly; I’ve seen many students confused over the difference between content-area literacy and disciplinary literacy, even after this competency, which theoretically should answer that. Sleeper wants to see 2-3 citations per milestone from the actual unit, rather than outside sources.

Name: EDU 357: Children's Literature
Subject: Education Semester/Term: Spring 2 - 2025 Instructor: Shannon Sleeper Long or Short?: Long (I took around 26 hours) Number of Milestone Activities: 6 Type of Milestone Activities: Essays Type of Final Assessment: Portfolio Notes & Overall Thoughts: This is the first class I’ve had at UMPI that has included quizzes; they have been worded very poorly. The competencies and milestones are short, but the final is quite involved with a lot of moving pieces. This class is about evaluating the quality of children’s literature and choosing appropriate books for children based on a variety of factors. There are no children’s books that are required to be read for the class.

Name: BUS 489
Subject: Business Semester/Term: Spring 2 - 2025 Instructor: Noah Winslow Long or Short?: Long (I took one whole term ![]() ![]() ![]() Number of Milestone Activities: 13 Type of Milestone Activities: 12 short and medium essay, and 1 quiz Type of Final Assessment: Comprehensive essay of the milestones and a presentation video. Notes & Overall Thoughts: Prof. Winslow is a good grader, give nice comment and fast responder. This class is both a theory and real life business practices. If you got business class before then this class will be smooth. If you already have experience in the real business world, the professor like that very much when you put your experience into the essay. I took a long time to finish this class because I didn't get a business class before so the business' terms really bugged me and take me a long time to understand them. On the other hand, the prof do not take the video presentation too hard, don't overcomplicated it, just do the milestones, then summarize them into the finals, then shoot the video, you will get a good grades. |
