I don't usually get to be hands on in the event of a patient code (CPR in progress), but had the chance today and the team brought the patient back.
My part was smaller than it used to be, but it's great to be reminded of the validity of your life choices every now and again.
CPR and basic first aid should be a fundamental college course required in your first semester.

Folks might not take the courses because they're concerned that when the effort is needed, they won't remember how or what to do. From a few things I've read, however, you don't have to do CPR perfectly to do some good.

THIS.
Think of it this way: If it's time to perform CPR, your patient's heart has stopped. They don't need careful choreography, they need any reasonably safe and on-target help they can get.
Relatedly, even an experienced provider is liable to break ribs. This is really the last time to worry about broken bones!

Rebel, great job! I know how you feel. I have been out of EMS for many years, but within one week I had a student have an 18 min. grand mal seizure in my classroom, then a few days later a young girl rolled her car and it was sliding on its roof towards me on the back country road I drive to work. I used my EMS skills so much that week I told my school President that I felt more like an EMT than a college instructor! Even though it had been years I jumped right back into my EMS mode, so I don't think you really forget it, but it was rewarding. It made me miss EMS work, but then I remembered the bad pay and 24 hour shifts and I was over it! LOL! Keep up the great work!

CPR, at least for the adult, has moved to just chest compressions. push HARD, push FAST, be sure someone has gone/called for help.
As Jonathan mentioned there is a sort of macabre joke that "unless your breaking ribs, your not doing it right"....it eludes to the need to push hard and fast, and the fact that folks who are in arrest are often frail and fragile to begin with. Remember....they are DEAD....they need help to survive (let's hope you get them back and they can be pissed about broken ribs!)

I don't remember the hard part, but I think that you compress to the beat of, "and another one's down, and another one's down, and another one bites the dust." Well, you probably should sing it subvocally, but it will give you the correct rhythm.
