“ Kids could go around parents and create a GoFundMe page on Facebook asking other relatives for help explaining the situation their parents put them in.”
Situation their parents put them in ? By not being able to finance their kids college ? That’s an unfair situation they were put in ? Shame on parents for raising their kids by putting a roof over their heads and Feeding and clothing them all while trying to save a little for retirement. Now they’re supposed to feel guilty because they can’t pay the full price tag for college tuition that’s way overpriced even at the public state university level, for a twenty year old that has their whole life to pay for it. I’d like for my kid to put up a go fund me page asking relatives for money. It wouldn’t be wisest decision they ever made.

Feeding, clothing, and sheltering the children that you CHOSE to have is the absolute bare minimum. That's not an accomplishment of superior merit. That's the unwritten agreement you made when you chose to birth or to adopt a child. Too many entitled parents want praise for doing nothing more than the legal minimum.

uh, car insurance ?
pretty sure that's required everywhere
also pretty sure they charge extra if you're under 24
------
> Room and Board? Kids can live with roommates to save on rent. Hardly a cardboard box.
have you see prices lately ?
house prices have shot up drastically in the last 5 years
and not just for people buying, but also for people renting
also consider apartments near universities are in high demand so prices are going to be especially high
------
> Money? $15 an hour jobs are everywhere now. Even a part-time 30hr a week job would be paying $23,400 a year. $23,400 + $5500 is a lot of money.
it isn't that much
rent, utilities, groceries, books for school, internet, gasoline, car insurance,
it was a lot of money 20 years ago -- not so much now
------
> Kids could take 1-4 classes in college instead ...
they've got to take at least 4 to be considered full time
if they're part time they don't get financial aid and part time students pay more for classes than full time
------
> Kids could go around parents and create a GoFundMe page on Facebook asking other relatives for help explaining the situation their parents put them in.
LOL, @ situation their parents put them in
------
> Parents can try all they want, but determined kids will find a way to follow their hearts and dreams.
so if their dream is to go to Juilliard in NYC where rent is $2200 a month all they have to do is work part time at ShakeShack and start a gofundme ?

or join the Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Army
there's even the merchant marines
they could join the French Foreign Legion -- serve 3 years and become a French citizen -- go to university for free

Obviously that’s the bare minimum, I’m not trying to write a book on the subject. I’m Also not Claiming to be superior or asking to have a superior merit badge”. I didn’t ask Nor do I need your praise. I was responding to a post that suggested kids start a go fund me page for tuition money because of the situation their parents put them in. “entitled parents” what’s the definition of an entitled parent ?

Most colleges will take up to 30 credits of AP/CLEP/DSST. If you max out alternative credit, they only need to take just 3 college classes per semester, and they'll still graduate in 5 years.
Technically you could go without a Cell Phone service and use a free IP phone number + free Wi-Fi, but your situation has to be pretty dire to get to that point. America is still one of the wealthiest countries on Earth. People can afford $15 a month no matter how poor they are.

Parents don't have to pay for a kid's college, but it would be unfair if that parent took away their car and kicked them out of the home right at the time they are transitioning to college.
As you said, if parents are poor np, they can get the full Pell Grant, get a job. That is how it works.
It will be harder for a middle-class kids to pay for the school they want, but it's possible even without parent support. If the college town is more fun, their friends are going there, and the program is better, etc., then a determined kid will do whatever to go to that school even if that school costs $5k -$10k more per year.

There's nothing you can do about it once that legal adult 18-year-old makes a decision what he/she wants to do.
Most parents of college kids hold the purse strings - they can tell their kids they won't support them in any way if they decide to take out loans (take the car, or stop paying for insurance, take the cell phone and not pay the monthly bills, not give them a cent, etc.). They can not co-sign any loans, nor take out ParentPlus loans. In essence, they can tell the kid their life will be pretty miserable with no help from mom & dad. How is a kid who wants to go away for college going to pay for it, without any help from their parents? The max you can take out for your freshman year is $3,500 subsidized and $2,000 unsubsidized. $5,500 is not going to pay for tuition, room & board anywhere in the country (assuming they want to go away to school). So I'm not sure where you think they're going to get the money to pay for this endeavor, but it's not going to be student loans.
The problem is that parents are as dumb about these things as the kids are. They take out loans to "help" because there's no way the kid can do it themselves. Take that off the table, and kids won't be able to get very far.
So again, sure, an 18-yo can "make a decision" but if the parents don't cooperate, there's not a lot that 18yo can do. I know my almost 18yo wants to move out as soon as he graduates, and I'm like, "figure it out." He's decided to live at home, work a FT and PT job over the summer, continue to stay home and work PT while he goes for his AAS at a local CC for 14 months, then he can move out. He'll be 19 ½ and hopefully making good money with a bunch saved by then. But once he sat down and crunched the numbers, he knew that he couldn't do anything on his own right away. As long as we continue to say "we'll help pay for your education but not for a ridiculously overhyped 'college experience'" he's pretty much stuck here unless he wants to live in a cardboard box.
Take away the Cell Phone? Oh please. They can buy a new Cell Phone for under $100 and an unlimited talk/text + data plan for $15 a month.
Take the car away? Well, they can buy a beater car for $1000.
Insurance? Who needs insurance? They got nothing to lose.
Room and Board? Kids can live with roommates to save on rent. Hardly a cardboard box.
Money? $15 an hour jobs are everywhere now. Even a part-time 30hr a week job would be paying $23,400 a year. $23,400 + $5500 is a lot of money.
Kids could take 1-4 classes in college instead of the 5 classes and spend extra time doing all the CLEP's/DSSTs the college allows. Kids could go around parents and create a GoFundMe page on Facebook asking other relatives for help explaining the situation their parents put them in.
Parents can try all they want, but determined kids will find a way to follow their hearts and dreams.
Slow them down? Maybe
Stop them? NOPE!!!
1) Phone - go ahead
2) Car - again, for a kid with basically no money, go ahead and find a $1000 car
3) Insurance is a state law, but drive without it if you want
4) Room & board - sure, if they can find someone to live with go ahead
5) $15/hr jobs - again, feel free - and my kids both make $15/hr, but for someone who makes $23k a year, even another $5500 is not going to pay tuition, room and board, AND have money left over for much of a "college experience"
6) they're going to need to know about CLEP's, and my family would laugh their heads off at a GFM page to beg for money to have a "college experience", but again, feel free
7) I'm not super worried about determined kids, I'm more worried about ones who don't know what they want but go to college anyway, then drop out and owe a shitload of loans and have no skills and no degree
Again, I am saying that IF my kids chose to be foolish and try to take a bunch of loans to get through school, I would not support them in any way. I'm also not going to support them if they decide to be drug addicts, or do other crazy stuff.
Instead, I will help them figure out what they want to do, and how to get there. Without going broke or taking out loans. I'm not an ogre, I just won't support someone putting themselves behind right from the start. If you want to think I'm some crazy controlling parent just because I'm not going to go along with some crazy scheme, feel free. But I'm going to think you're a terrible parent if you encourage your kids to take out many thousands of dollars in loans just so they can get a "college experience" when they could just get something similar for basically free by hanging around college kids right in their own home town. That's just silly.
But hey, if you can find a kid who's determined enough to do a bunch of CLEP and DSST exams, get tons of scholarships, and then work 30+ hours a week to be able to afford college, awesome - good luck finding them. I doubt there are a lot out there with no guidance from parents. WHICH IS EXACTLY THE POINT I WAS MAKING IN THE FIRST PLACE!
BTW, LevelUP, how old are your kids that you have such insight?
