Upper Level BALS Courses
#1
Music
I'm now half-way done with my degree and I'm trying to nail down some plans for the rest of my credits.  I'm working on a BALS from TESU, potentially with a concentration in Humanities.  I'm looking for some help and advice for UL credits.

I'm mainly just looking for upper level classes in Art, Music, English, Literature, History, and Sociology.

From searching around here, these are what I have found - are there any other options I'm missing?  Any opinions on which are good courses and which to maybe avoid?  Thanks for your help!

Study.com

  • HIS 306 - American Civil War Era
  • HIS 308 - Causes & Effects of Vietnam War
  • HIS 311 - The Holocaust and WW2
  • SOC 305 - Sociology of Work
UExcel
  • SOC 305 - Cultural Diversity
  • SOC 330 - World Population
DSST
  • History of the Soviet Union
Ed4Credit
  • SOC 315 - Social Psychology
Coopersmith
  • Jewish Art of Antiquity (ART 301)
  • The Music of the Orthodox Jew (MUS 301)
  • A Social History of Jewish Food (SOC 302)
  • Sociology of the Ba'al Teshuva Movement (SOC 303)
  • Medieval Hispano-Jewish Poetry (LIT 401)
CSU Global
  • Race, Gender, and Ethnic Relations (SOC 310)
  • Community Development (SOC 460)
  • Evaluation of Research and Theory (SOC 470)
  • US History from 1945-Present (HST 300)
(And since I have your attention - does anyone know anything about the Culinary courses from Coopersmith?  Do they come in as LL or are they somehow only usable in certificates?  The credit recommendation on the site is confusing me.  http://secularcourses.com/culinary-arts/ )

First, wanted to let you know that History, Soc, and Psych are not considered Humanities. They are SocSci courses that would not work in the HUM concentration. Second here are some more UL Study.com courses. Not sure on all of them, so you should check before using them.

These should all work, but I'm not 100% sure that they won't duplicate each other
BUS 305: Leadership Communication (MAN-376) - confirmed that this would work by someone on the forum
BUS 313: Organizational Communication (COM-391) - confirmed that this would work by someone on the forum, plus it's a COM prefix so it's good
BUS 324: Managerial Communication (MAN-373) - confirmed that this would work by someone on the forum

These will work (PSY prefix works in SocSci concentration, but not HUM):
BUS 323: Organizational Theory (PSY-360)
PSY 301: Industrial/Organizational Psychology (PSY-401)
PSY 310: Psychology of Personality (PSY-352)
PSY 312: History & Systems of Psychology (PSY-400)

These are iffy:
BUS 307: Leadership and Organizational Behavior (MAN-312)
BUS 309: Digital Marketing & Advertising (MAR-441 but comes into CIS area)

The CIS prefix is a NatSci (not HUM), not certain that these will all work:
COMPSCI 302: Systems Analysis & Design (CIS-320)
COMPSCI 303: Database Management (CIS-311)
BUS 303: Management Info Systems (CIS-301)

Thanks! I just recently saw that History didn't work as a Humanities but didn't know about the other two. It might make more sense then to go for a SocSci concentration. But I might still be able to pull out a Humanities, I'll just have to be very careful of my courses. Do you know if the concentration can be any level of courses? (Does it need to be mostly UL or can it be a mix?) That part wasn't clear to me on the TESU website.

Do you know of any UL credits in the following areas I may be missing or other places to search? I'm interested in taking mainly these subjects for my AOS, regardless of concentration. Art, Music, English, Literature, History, and Sociology.

I'm trying to plan out the rest of my courses to see what I can swing by way of concentrations - I'm thinking of trying for a double concentration but the 9 UL courses in each area is throwing me for a little loop. Will the Capstone be considered an UL course that will fit in your concentration or is it considered separately? And if you can use it for a concentration - can you use it for two different ones? Thanks!

Yes, the capstone is in your concentration for a BALS - but not in the BSBA.  So for the BALS, you need an additional 5 UL courses in the AOS. With the BSBA, you need 4 UL courses in the concentration/AOS.

I would also be interested in which UL courses for the BALS people recommend out of the ones that have been posted

This is what I have so far plus the Causes and Effects of the Vietnam War course. I'm working on Advanced Technical Writing at the moment.

EDIT: The courses on the top were through B&M courses and military credits. Causes and Effects of the Vietnam War and Advanced Technical Writing are from Study.com.

Is it possible for someone doing the general BALS to take all of this BUS COMM courses? I feel like they would be more interesting than the history courses for me. The holocaust course appears to have 3 essays!

the culinary courses are lower level - to my knowledge, there are no upper level online culinary courses that you can take as a non-matriculated student in the USA.
