Utilizing FEMA credits toward an Emergency Management Degree
#11
In my research I have found that most Associate Programs offered by Community Colleges require a "Residency" (must complete some courses on campus).

Based on the fact that you have no previous college credit, and the fact that I cannot find any "local" programs that offer Associate Degrees in Emergency Management, I would say your best bet is TESC.

I would suggest you call TESC and inquire about your EMT Certificate and any related experience, and see if it would qualify for college credit and for the practicum that TESC requires.

I would also double check with them to see that FEMA ISP courses and USFA courses would fulfill all Individualized Option and Free Elective requirements, so that you would not need to take any Emergency courses through TESC.

Through my personal research, the combination of CLEP/DSST to fulfill General Education requirements and FEMA/USFA to fulfill Individualized Option and Free Elective Requirements, with the addition of the practicum, should be all that is needed.

Remember, TESC allows RAW transfer of up to 25 FEMA credits, which would save you the $1500 transfer fee from FCC.

Again, you would definitely need to check, double check, and triple check, and get all of the above in writing with TESC.

Are you Active Military??? If so, your savings is incredible at TESC.
Quote:Annual Enrollment Tuition First Year, Subsequent Years
New Jersey residents* $1,275, $1,115
Out-of-state residents $2,300, $1,995

*Regardless of residence, full-time active duty military personnel have the option to pay New Jersey residency tuition.

Please do, I'm still waiting to decide on Excelsior vs TESC for a Business IT program. If I decide on TESC, I can scoop up the AS at the same time (for an additional graudation fee).

Quote:The BSHS and ASPSS degree programs are designed for mid-career adults currently employed or volunteering in the area of their chosen specialization. Both degrees require the student to complete a Practicum using his/her current paid or volunteer work in an appropriate human services setting. Students in either the BSHS or ASPSS degree program must be performing professional or paraprofessional duties. Clerical work activities are not appropriate for the Practicum.

Students are required to have a Practicum setting approved by the dean of the Heavin School of Social and Behavioral Sciences or designee before being admitted to either the BSHS or the ASPSS degree programs.

Thanks so much for all that wonderful information.
I have about 8 FEMA credits - do you know if other colleges accept transfer FEMA credits from TESC? I usually have all my test scores sent to IU but it looks like I may have to get the FEMA credis on a transcript from TESC before it's recognized. I'm not sure what else to do and cost is a major factor here. Any advice is much appreciated.

You'll have to speak with each individual college about accepting FEMA courses through TESC Credit Banking. Excelsior used to do it, but no longer. If TESC Credit Banking is not accepted, you can do it through FCC.

Please let us know how your call went w/TESC. I could very well be wrong on this but they usually tell you to send an e-mail to the school and the reply is normally they would need you to pay $75.00 and send any transcripts, documentation, certificates etc to the school. They have the worst customer service even though they have good programs. They are a little more liberal in what they give you credit for than Excelsior, but my dealings w/Excelsior has always been good. W/TESC....Not so good.
