WGU recruiting practices
#21
I think they are quickly growing tired of me. I've been on the phone with them almost every day this week drilling them with questions since their layout of information is sadly not as comprehensive in my opinion as TESU. That said, I can definitely relate to what the OP is speaking of. They are beyond aggressive in their marketing technique. Perhaps everyone on the phones are newly graduated MBAs? Lol!

And by the way, thanks a lot dfrecore. Now I know why I keep getting all those darn emails and junk calls about a $1500 cruise! lol jk

I was on WGU's mailing list for months and just got occasional emails about their programs and such. I'm not sure why you folks got targeted so much.

I must have not been a very attractive candidate hilarious

Oh man I just saw that I made this exact joke on the previous page a few months back. Dang it.

Well, at least I'm consistent?

I've gotten NINE emails since Friday night and SIX phone calls!!! All I wanted to know was what the prerequisites were for a particular program and if it was possible to fulfill them post-grad. I needed to know this because I have a limited time here in which to get any extra classes on my undergrad transcript since I'm applying for graduation July 1. Turns out I don't need to kill myself just to get them on my TESU transcript. I can just take the courses, add them to my ACE transcript and submit the ACE transcript along with my undergrad transcript. I have no intention of getting my master's anytime soon. I'm interested in education but want to substitute teach for a year before I commit to a licensure/master's program. I really hope I don't get harassed for the next year.

Haha, seriously? I actually haven't had any spam emails nor calls from them...
They did send me a few letters as I was asking for more info to their programs.

The Tale Of Two Sides...Reading some of these aggressive examples with WGU are so far from my experience. Perhaps, it helped that I let them know early that I was comparing others schools and gave them a time frame on when I would be making a decision. Based on our initial calls, they provided everything needed to be accepted and we agreed to a follow-up date. There never were calls or emails prior to the date. Even after deciding on them, I postponed my start 3 times. WGU never gave me any issues and only called once a month for a status update for the new month start. It was this casual approach that really won me over in the end. I started to feel guilty delaying the start:

Hold Up!!??!! - maybe they TRICKED me into SIGNING with all their professionalism!!!!!

DAMN YOU WGU!!!!

I told them my plans right up front - told them I had no intention of signing up for a year. I've had another four phone calls to and six emails - today!!!

My husband was super annoyed with them, way too aggressive, and now is considering NOT going with them at all because of it. He thinks it reflects what they'll be like once he's enrolled - bugging the crap out of him.

But, when I called his enrollment person to ask a question, she was totally not helpful at all. So it's like she's bipolar or something - really really wants to talk to him about stuff, but then doesn't have any answers when I have questions. Wacky.

I called back when they first launched their Software Dev degree. I had no technical experience and the enrollment councilor (I think that is what his title was), called me back to answer some questions. He was saying that I could get my A+ cert, then come back to apply. At that time had no intention on getting my A+. I had taken the certification course at my CC about a year before that and barely passed since I was so not interested in hardware or networking. I passed the class and got credit, but never took the actual test. Anyway, I questioned why I needed an A+ cert for a Software degree (honest question) and he basically yelled at me.

I'm looking forward to hearing about the new BSCS, though. They have all my transcripts. If the CS program is a good fit for me, I'm ready to proceed once I finish up once I gathered a few more credits. I'm just hoping I get a nice person this time around.

This is who I worked with during enrollment and my mentor. Both solid throughout. Bummer to hear some of the silliness. Perhaps you guys are dealing with some of the younger support trying to hit a number over those looking to provide value which creates the real numbers.

Mentor:

Leland Larsen, MBA
Student Mentor, Business
Western Governors University
Toll Free 1.877.435.7948 Ext. 5472

Enrollment (Gisela could not have been nicer. She also was very insightful during my mentor selection process. Easily one of the biggest reasons I signed with WGU)

For enrollment - ask her to connect you with the best person for your interests & she will make it happen.

@dfrecore - Hopefully, your husband can work through these early growing pains. The school is too solid to let an enrollment hiccup mess with the partnership.
