I thought I'd bump this to remind you. Homeschoolers tend to have flexibility with scheduling. This a bona fide learning experience. It's a fun and memorable way to actually learn astronomy. I've made my travel plans. It's also a vocabulary builder. An eclipse is a syzygy.

What do you recommend doing going up in the mountains?

Darn, I'm out in west TX, would had loved for this to be a better viewing spot.

Side note for other space geeks, I downloaded the ISS detector awhile back, and recently started using it, it's pretty great.....you know down to seconds when it will appear, and where, and can watch it go through the sky. It's happening around 930 out here, along with Iridium flares early in the morning (the app also has these). You can set reminders so that 5 minutes before the ISS/flare appear, you know to go outside.
We are all on the same side here, trying to better our lives....so let's get along and help each other out.

Learn a trade. Gain technical skills. Make money, then use this money to get a degree...if you have the desire.

Take the link in the original post. It has a great map and all kinds of advice. If you aren't close to the path, I recommend picking a spot close to a major highway more or less along the path. If the weather is bad a few hours before, hop in the car and drive to where the weather forecast is more favorable.

Thanks for posting about the ISS detector. http://www.issdetector.com/

I have reserved a hotel room in Bowling Green, KY for the night before. Expedia allows you to reserve a room and cancel it until just a day or two before. I live in Michigan and am planning to take my son and maybe some other family members down for the night. I might also book a room in Illiinois or Missouri.
