Advice on the best CLEP to take...

My wife has just finished the SL Eng. I course. English is not her strong subject at all. I don't think she wants to do any more SL courses, so I'm trying to help her chart the best course.

As of now she has

Tons of FEMA credits, 20 - Science and SS credits from a regionally accredited university, 4 - Analytical Geometry and Calculus and the SL Eng I course.

My idea is that she needs to strike while the iron is hot as far as writing goes. Should she take the English Modular course at this point? I have no idea of what degree she might get in the future. My guess is the TESC FEMA AA. She doesn't really need a degree but it has always been a goal of her's.

Which writing exam will be the most accepted by the Big 3? Didn't she already satisfy the EC writing requirements with SL Eng. I?

COSC awards English Comp 2 credit for the Technical Writing DSST....it's a very straightforward exam. Unfortunately TESC and EC don't recognize it for Eng. Comp 2 credit.

COSC does accept those FEMA for free, and they are actually more liberal in awarding FEMA credit as they follow the Frederich CC award guidelines. Your wife might be a lot close than you think to an AS from COSC....they are the cheapest too.

This is the rough degree plan I have worked out for an AS at COSC using FEMA credit. This is NOT vetted through COSC, but should be really close.

General Education requirements.

(6)English Comp 1,2 College Comp CLEP (satisfies both, 6 credits) OR Straighterline English Comp 1 (3 credits) and Technical Writing DSST (3 credits)
(3)Oral Communications Speech, DSST (3 credits)
(3)Literature/Fine Arts Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP (6 credits)
(3)Math ALEKS College Algebra (3) OR CLEP College Math (6) OR CLEP College Algebra (3) OR Straighterline College math (3)
(3)Ethics Saylor Organization Business Ethics (3 credits)
(4-6)Natural Science Biology or Chemistry CLEP (6 each) OR Straighterline Science Course with Lab (4) OR DSST Geology (3) with DSST Astronomy (3)
(3)US History or US Gov. Any US History/Government DSST or CLEP (3)

Behavioral Science
Global Studies
Non-US History All three of these requirements are satisfied by the single exam DSST Human Cultural Geography (3)

The above completed would = 31-34 credits (assuming you took the 6 credit A&I Literature and on which Science route you take) This completes the Gen eds required for Associates and Bachelors Degree’s at Charter Oak.

You now need 24-29 elective credits. These can come entirely from FEMA IS courses, or through police/aviation/trade credit, or through a combination of those types of credit. In general Charter Oak follows the Frederick CC recommendation on awarding credit…so anything marked “college credit” on the FEMA IS Website should suffice . (Note that Thomas Edison is a bit more restrictive on which FEMA they accept…but that doesn’t matter at all if your choosing Charter Oak in the end).

Congratulations to your wife! Yes, for an associate degree she would just need these 3 credits, but she would need 3 more credits in English II for a bachelor's degree. They do not accept CLEP for the Written English Requirement. They do accept UExcel (but it is only 3 credits, too, and probably duplicates SL Eng I) and ECE exam for 6 credits.

TESC requires 6 English Comp credits for its associates programs. They accept CLEP College Composition (not modular) as Comp I and II. Modular is only counted as Comp I. I think there is something about doing the essay, but someone else can explain that better. Currently, TESC does not require a capstone or cornerstone for its non-AAS and non-ASAST programs.

Yeah that's right, 3 hour cornerstone is all you would have to take at COSC for the AS. With the 20 credits in Science and SS, SL EC 1, and Math done I think the OP's wife is very close to being finished...

LOL! I just dug up her old transcripts. I found PF, 4 - Analytically Calc and Geometry, 3 - Comp and English Lit. (oops), 1- Information Literacy, 3 - Music Appreciation.

As my wife's academic adviser I think I may be in deeeeep doo-doo. It looks like she already took English I through PF. The poor girl just slugged, struggled and fought through English I through SL. If she already finished that requirement through PF I am going to get my butt kicked!

Not only that but I refuse to share how many months I just paid for her to finish the course. :willynilly:
