Walden Tempo - MBA program is back!

This is pretty interesting. Has anyone looked further into the no cost option to know the catch? Like, if you end up doing terrible and drop out, or change majors, switch to regular course options, etc. I like to know all the risks. I like the MBA idea... but am kinda leaning toward an HR path... The no cost option doesn’t seem to appl to that concentration...

Theoretically you could sign up for the free first term MBA offer, try to only take things that would apply to both degrees, and then switch to your desired concentration/program for subsequent terms.

I think it is definitely worth a shot if there is no big risk.  But I don’t know a lot about the Competency learning thing....

Just in case anyone is not already aware of this... Walden has some sort of dispute going on. It seems to be directly related to a Nursing program, so I don’t know if that impact the MBA program we are discussing in this thread. https://www.hlcommission.org/download/_P...1.9.20.pdf

I am seriously interested in taking advantage of this offer. I talked to an “enrollment specialist” a few minutes ago. Things that I asked about that I thought might interest other people (with the disclaimer that people like this are often not fully up to date):

1. Credits earned during this free period CAN be transferred to other graduate programs at Walden (such as regular MBA programs).

2. No tuition costs at enrollment time, no mandatory pre-paying for the next term, or anything like that.

3. Continuous enrollment is not required. You can request a leave of absence of up to 12 months after the free period. I specifically mentioned that I am pursuing a 2nd bachelors at UMPI and might do the 3 months at Walden, take a leave at Walden to finish at UMPI, then come back to Walden to finish the MBA. Enrollment person said this was fine.

4. I need to look more into book costs/rules at Walden.

I just got off the phone with someone too.  There are no books to buy.  Everything is included.  You will only pay the $75 technology fee.   I love that you asked about breaks.  I might decide to do that too.  If we were local friends, I’d say we should be study buddies. LOL.   Did you ask if the credits could be transferred OUT?  I don’t know if I would do that, but it would be good to know.

I was curious about the books. The person that I spoke to said specifically that you did have to buy books. I am hoping that he was wrong/thinking of non-Tempo/etc. I put an email into the person that I spoke to for a clarification on this point.

I did not ask about transferring credits out.

Among the interesting things that I noted: the maximum leave of absence for the Tempo program is 5 months in a calendar year AND the fact that if you take a leave of absence you may lose any discounts or promotions. So, a leave of absence could cost you the 20% discount for subsequent enrollment periods.

I think the free term would be well worth it, even if you take an extra term at regular price. So a Masters may just cost you $2500 to $2700 for a free term + a regular priced term. Depending on the Masters degree discounts available, I think this free term or the 50% off lifetime is the best deal...

I did the free term for the master's in early childhood administration in 2019. This really is a free gift. I ended up with 13.5 graduate credit hours for free at the end of the free term. There is no way to complete these degrees during one term. However, I think that I could have gotten done in two terms. The program I was in had a LOT of writing. Also, you can only have two or three classes open at any one time. This means that you sometimes have to wait for grading to happen. So, a person needs to have a strategy. Some classes have quick question sets or quizzes. So, I always tried to never have two classes with major writing assignments going at the same time, so that I could work on the quick finish stuff while waiting for a paper to be graded.

Also, you can transfer these credits out of the program. That said, graduate programs don't like transfer credit generally, so there is limited utility in this. I do think that MBA credits might be more easily transferable. I would look at the University of the People as a possible transfer destination. So, maybe try to line up the courses with those that look most like the UofP courses and take those for free.
