I know that homeschooling parents often use instructional materials designed by experts to aid them. When attending public schools, the parent should be there to support the teacher. The teacher can't force the student to read his/her textbook or complete his/her homework. The teacher can't force the parent to stay up to date with the student's progress. That's where the parent's personal decisions and actions become important.
Parents don't have to be experts in every subject to be successful at homeschooling. They just have to be experts in their own children - how they learn, what workload they can handle, their strengths, their weaknesses, etc. As you said, parents provide the instructional materials for the children, which could even include DVD instructors, outside classes, or tutors. My mother has a degree in engineering and could have taught me physics and pre-calculus, but I was learning independently by then.
I don't know what the future holds, but I know Who holds the future.
