Also, as you take CLEP and DSST exams, you get to send the score to one school for free, but that doesn't work if you haven't applied. You get a year after being accepted before you have to take something and become enrolled, so apply, then before the year's up, take the cornerstone or a TECEP. People have gotten blind-sided by changes out of the blue, but applying and getting your courses planned can protect you from a lot of it.
I also found it to be a powerful motivator to be official and see my courses populated in the evaluation.
