If your webcam has a manual focus (either physical or via a settings app), I found manually focusing works best. That is what I started doing on my proctored finals (on both RPnow and ProctorU) and it works out really well.
Mine has software (the Logitech Camera Settings app) that allows me to manually adjust the focus. For that, I just click off autofocus, manually focus on the ID and then take the picture. Afterward, just turn autofocus back on. If you're using a different brand of webcam you may have something similar.
I got the Logitech c270 and it doesn't come with a manual/auto focus setting. I'm going to send it back for a refund and find something better. What Logitech brand do you have?
