Weird. You mean you don't see the icons that control bold or italic or that they don't work when you use them? You might try the keyboard shortcuts (ctrl-b for Bold, ctrl-i for Italic).
OK, did a little research. If you go into the User control panel and choose "Edit Options" on the left, there's a setting called, "Show the MyCode formatting options on the posting pages.". If you turn it off, the formatting bar disappears from the editor. If you turn it on, I think it will fix your problems. You can also make source mode the default when you create posts.
