I'm likely in the minority but I don't see anything wrong with what he wrote. He's being up front with what's expected for the class, that it's not a 100-level class and therefore 100-level work won't lead to a passing grade. Instructors like this make earning a degree that much more of an accomplishment. Good for him, and you for manning up and sticking with it.

I must disagree...I believe that a teacher has a responsibility to his students beyond just teaching the course material and that is the responsibility to encourage each student to achieve their best and to foster an environment that is condusive to learning. This teacher is setting up a negative and tense vibe from the outset. As I said before, if it was an undergrad level class with young students, I could partially understand a tone like the one he chose to take, but it is not appropriate in this situation.
