Sophia is heavily recommended due to cost and ease minus the English 1 & 2 courses at Sophia, which are considerably longer than the UMPI options. This is why it is universally agreed upon in the forum to take English 1 & 2 at UMPI.
Science Lab historically has been suggested to use SDC (Biology + Lab) because it is more manageable than the confirmed brutal UMPI Biology course. However, Sophia has entered the building as a new option with their Intro to Chemistry and new Intro to Chemistry + Lab course that has been confirmed for transfer approval at UMPI. If you are already paying the membership, I would encourage your son to knock out those courses and Spanish 1 if he also needs the language requirement for UMPI.
Sophia, for the Science requirements, would be the least expensive. You have Environmental Science, Intro to Chemistry + Lab course that can be completed for $99 vs. SDC membership + Labster fee. As mentioned, if he needs the language requirement for $99, he can secure three essential requirements for UMPI.
Suppose he has already purchased the SDC membership and started the Biology course; in that case, I will encourage your son to take a UL course at SDC for his second course that can transfer into the M&L degree (you get two courses with your monthly membership).
I suggest courses at SDC with one assignment; it is easier to complete at UMPI if the SDC has two or three assignments.
Specific to the OP's question concerning the BABA, I am unaware of a LL option that would work; in addition, of a UL option that even makes sense as an easier route to take over UMPI.
I look forward to the OP succeeding with something different from those who have graduated. That is always fun when someone shakes up the cart with a new approach to completing their degree.

However, to assist here is a link and details shared on UMPI's website:
Residency Requirements
All four-year degree candidates must complete at least 30 credit hours of study through UMPI in order to receive a baccalaureate degree. At least 12 of these credits must be in the major and at least 9 of these 12 must be at the upper level (300-level or above).
Hopefully, this provides some clarity.
This would leave 3 more credits to take at UMPI that are in you major (but not necessarily UL) and 18 more credits from UMPI that could be any course.
That is how I take it as well. 30 credits total. 12 in the major with a minimum of 9 of those being UL (300+) courses. The one issue is that most of the UL courses required for the various majors aren't available elsewhere or they are more difficult at other places. From what I understand Study.com courses can be a beast however UMPI courses are generally 1 test or 1 paper to get your grade.
