@TopHatWombat, Interesting, I don't know who you corresponded with, but they may have provided you a different route instead of going for an associates, to focus on your future goal of say a Masters or to continue with your current Bachelors and leaving out that associates. I, on the other hand would recommend asking another academic advisor, ask to have a second program added to your program list and that's it... leave it at that for now.
As reference, carrythenothing completed a second Bachelors, added an Associates and two certificates in June 2022
Another data point, jsd, completed a third Bachelors, added an Associates and also two certificates last month...
If your data point is in between these two dates, you should take the extra Associates as it's FREE! One word of advice, have a phrase or sentence such as, "I am really interested in Computer Science and need this Associates to get 18 credits within that subject matter, this is used for teaching and it's a requirement.
