I have a couple of questions, would it be “illegal” or perhaps even dangerous if on my resume, I hypothetically were to put “University of Maine” and didn’t add the presque isle?
It is never a good idea to put anything on your resume intended to deceive. If you are not comfortable with putting a school on your resume, then don't go there.
I’d also argue there’s more to an applicant than “target school,” yet that’s what employers do.
Is that meant to justify fudging the school name on your resume? It doesn't.
I agree that employers should be more nuanced. You insist that "many employers see these schools as degree mills", we have not really seen that here. If you're trying to get into a Wall Street bank, or a top accounting firm, I could see how an online degree might make things more difficult, but I would expect there to be plenty of smaller employers out there who will be less snobby about your degree.
