The list of modern Presidents and candidates that have been targeted is long:
Teddy Roosevelt was shot at.
FDR, shot at
Truman had an attempt stopped which killed a White House policeman and one of the assassins.
JFK, killed
RFK, killed
George Wallace, shot
Ford, shot at twice
Reagan, shot.
Bush Sr, foiled car bomb attack in Kuwait
Bush Jr had a grenade thrown at him overseas
Barack Obama was targeted by a gunman shooting at the White House.
Trump, shot, plus two bystanders killed.
Plus, attempted letter bombs, and attempts to send Ricin.
Then the mentioned shootings above of non-Presidential figures.
It may well be that the Secret Service fell down on the job here, but I also think it's fantastically difficult to secure a candidate at public events. Especially from a lone assassin who doesn't care about escape.
