This question has come up a few times lately. My opinion is:
If you have time before the UMPI session starts, it would be a good use of that time to complete as many UMPI requirements as possible via Sophia, SDC or other options. The fewer requirements you have left when you arrive at UMPI, the less risk and the more flexibility you will have. So, if you start at UMPI in September, you have about a month, and I would suggest taking advantage of that.
To me, Goal 1 would be getting my UMPI requirements down to 10. Goal 2 would be getting it even lower. You will still need 10 classes for residency, but if you have fewer than 10 requirements, you will have more options for which UMPI classes to take, potentially making it easier to get a minor, or to take the fastest UMPI electives possible, whatever your goals are.
Having said that, without such considerations, I would rather take a UMPI class than a SDC class. I find SDC classes extremely tedious. Which is faster will depend on your motivation and habits. I think they theoretically take about the same amount of time, but in practice, UMPI is faster for me because it doesn't bore me to death and make me procrastinate.
Sophia is super fast. I would definitely max out Sophia credits.
Just my opinion. Good luck!
