However, I can say that some colleges will not accept a CLEP score if you ever took a college class on the subject in the past. Especially if you failed that class. In other words, if you take an American Government course and fail it, you can't take the American Goverment CLEP test to get credit for that course.
So, in my opinion, it is still better to take a CLEP test for which your college will give you credit before taking the class. If you fail it, your out $70, 90 minutes of your time, and you may have to take the course. If you pass it, you paid $70 to get credit for a class that would have cost you $300 to $800 and dozens of hours of your time.
EDIT: I have also just found out that some colleges (University of Florida, for example), require that CLEP exams be completed before the end of the student's first full semester of enrollment. In other words, if your school has such a policy, they may not give you credit for a CLEP exam taken after you have completed your first semester. As with all advice on this board, CHECK WITH YOUR SCHOOL for the final answer.
My school has a similar policy that will not let you take cleps or anything else for that matter after your first semester. They are really meant for hs credits, like AP History etc. However, if you know people (deans), then you can get one of them to sign off on the creds. Which is what I am doing by making the excuse that there is no other course I could take.
I go to RIT, BTW. I think someone asked. My school has a testing center on campus and you are required to test there. So they can I guess keep track of everything. Most schools also only allow a certain amount of credits from these tests, I have heard 15 is about average.
I am also wondering if a failed clep shows up on a transcript. Right now I have a 4.0 and would hate for something to show up on my transcript saying that I failed a clep. Even though I do not think any graduate admissions would even care what I did on the cleps. But anyway.
Just a bit from my experiences, hope this helps!
